OLCHS Welcomes New Dean

OLCHS welcomes a new dean to the 2014-15 school year:  Hamed Askar. Hamed is a 1991 graduate.  He has his Master's Degree in Behavior/Emotional Disorders and a second Master's Degree in Educational Leadership. Before becoming a Dean at OLCHS, Hamed was employed at a residential facility for 11 years and was also a Chicago public school teacher for 11 years. When asked about his new position, Hamed said, "It's Great to be back!"

As a dean, Hamed will be responsible for remediating the behavior of students violating various aspects of the student discipline and attendance code. Hamed assumes the role vacated by Sheila Wantiez. Wantiez retired in June after serving as a dean for 10 years.  <<read more>>

Homecoming Grand Marshal

Oak Lawn Community High School's Homecoming traditions include window painting, spirit days, T-shirts, and of course, an honorary Grand Marshal. The 2014 Homecoming Parade Grand Marshal is Pat Land. Pat has been a special education teacher and prevocational coordinator at OLCHS for 19 years.

Pat is particularly excited about this year's theme, Spartans on Ice, for her favorite sport is ice-skating. In fact, in 1998, Pat secured a grant to provide ice skating lessons to students in the Life Skills program. When Pat was informed that she was selected as this year's Grand Marshal she was surprised and excited, for she feels it is a great honor and a wonderful way for her to begin her year of celebration. Pat will retire at the end of the school year.

The Annual Homecoming Parade steps-off at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 25, 2014, from the Oak Lawn Village Hall and continues West on 95th Street to the Oak Lawn Community High School football stadium for the pep-rally and fireworks show.

 Baseball Makes Grades a Priority

While performing on the diamond is a high priority for most high school students, others choose to excel in the classroom as well. The Oak Lawn Community High School baseball team proved that last season by qualifying for the Illinois High School Association Team Academic Achievement Award. Qualifying schools will be recognized on the IHSA Website and will be included in the 2014-15 State Final Boys Baseball Program.

The IHSA recently recognized last year's team for earning a 3.11 total cumulative team grade point average. Seniors Mitch Swatek, Jake Slusinski and Matt Dunne led the Spartans in the classroom. All three are now continuing to grow in college as Swatek is at Southern Illinois University, Slusinski is at St. Xavier University and Dunne is at Roosevelt University. Underclassmen earning a 4.0 GPA or higher were Joe Dodaro and Alan Spies.  <<read more>>
