Director of Supervision, Intervention and Enrichment Joins Administration

OLCHS adds a position to its administration this year: the Director of Supervision, Intervention and Enrichment.  Chris Newton, formerly of the math department, has been appointed to this position.  Chris will provide leadership and direction according to the school's mission, vision, and values statement and conduct a wide range of activities including: leadership, coordination and oversight of the revised certificated staff evaluation plan; completion of certificated staff evaluations, including the incorporation of student learning growth as a significant component of the evaluation process; and leadership, coordination, and oversight of a comprehensive and systematic student intervention program.

Chris looks forward to this new step.  Chris said, "After 15 years of teaching at OLCHS, I am excited to begin a new chapter in my career.  I look forward to working with the faculty on a new evaluation plan as well as building on the RTI (response to intervention) system that we currently have in place.  It will be very challenging work, but very rewarding as well."  <<read more>>

Parent-Teacher Conferences -Tuesday, September 30

PTC, No Date

The first Parent-Teacher Conference night is:

Tuesday, September 30, 2014, 5:00 to 8:30 p.m.

As articulated in the Spartan Compact, parent-teacher conferences are an extremely important part of the two-way communication between parents and teachers. Parents interested in checking on their student's progress this fall are asked to take advantage of this day. Conferences are also a place for parents to tell teachers things about their child: How he likes to learn. What she says about the class at home. How he enjoys spending free time. What she says about other students in class.

Teachers will be alphabetically located in the Spartan and Auditorium Gyms.  No appointment is necessary.  Please take the opportunity to meet your son or daughter's teachers, guidance counselor, dean, activity sponsor, or coach. The school will have Arabic, Polish, and Spanish interpreters available to assist parents during both evenings.

Again this year, staff will be on-hand to assist parents in updating their SchoolMessenger, enrolling to receive the weekly electronic Oak Leaflet Newsletter, and creating a Family Access account for gradebook access. Representatives from Herff Jones will be in the Spartan Lobby for underclassmen ring orders and graduation materials. The Athletic Booster Club will also be selling Spartanwear and related merchandise. The PTSA will also have membership and scholarship information available.

 Szaflarski Named to All-Tourney Team

When the boys' soccer team started play in the Windy City Classic, it knew the action would give a solid read on what lies ahead for the season as a whole. The Spartans found out that some young talent is developing into a leadership role. That was exemplified when sophomore co-captain Michal Szflarski earned recognition as an All-Tournament Team selection.

The impressive part is that the competitive tournament featured 32 teams, and Szflarski, who is a midfielder, rose to the top of the class against this stiff competition. Szflarski recorded a goal and an assist. And since the tournament, he has added another goal to his season total. Overall, the Spartans are 3-3 on the season.

"He is a sophomore and is the co-captain of the varsity team, which is quite an accomplishment," said head coach Nate Joiner. "The tournament had 32 teams in it, which makes it a good honor for him, especially being so young. He is a great leader. He has a ton of experience despite being so young."  <<read more>>

Student-Parent Handbook Reminders

Handbook Cover2014-15B

Attendance Reminders!

To ensure that students are successful please make school attendance a priority. It is important for students to attend school each day and to receive a good night's sleep. Parents and students should make every effort to avoid scheduling dental and medical appointments during the school day. If an appointment must be made during the school day, efforts should be made to vary the periods missed to attend such appointments.

Pre-Arranged Absence Form

When students need to leave during the school day for situations such as court appearances, funerals, and dental/medical appointments, a Pre-Arranged Absence Form (available online or in the Deans'/Attendance Office) must be completed and submitted prior to the appointment.

Student Deliveries

As part of our building security expectations, the school does not accept phone messages, forgotten gym clothes, lunch money, homework assignments, and projects that need to be delivered to students. Please make sure students leave home fully prepared for school.

OLCHS Website Mobile App

Launched last year, as part of our ongoing commitment to communicate with stakeholders, OLCHS partnered with SchoolMessenger on the development of our very own app. Download the app now for your smartdevice using these links or search for the app by name, Oak Lawn CHSD - in the Apple App Store and Google Play for Android.

The app is designed to provide easy access to school and district information including calendars, sports schedules, notifications, social media, and more. And this is just the beginning. Based on your feedback we envision continuing to build out the app to meet future needs. Download the app and be sure to tell others to do the same! Users are encouraged to email Assistant Principal Joseph McCurdy to suggest content and links that should be added to make the app even more useful. <<read more>>

Skyward Mobile App

Skyward-Mobile

The Skyward Mobile App continues to provide parents with student information at their fingertips. Although Skyward Family Access allows parents to review their student's attendance records, grades, academic history, and discipline from any computer, the Skyward Mobile App provides many of the same features but allows users to easily view the information from a smartdevice. Visit the App Store or Android Market to download the App.

If you need a Skyward Access username/password or need your password reset, please contact Jill Malkowski at 708/741-5611 or jmalkowski@olchs.org.
