Senior Nick Minnella Featured in SouthtownStar |
If everything goes as planned, at this time next summer Nick Minnella will be volunteering in Bolivia. It's been a dream of his to give back to a country in need. As president of Cross Countries, a volunteer group that started with a group of runners who wanted to give back, the senior-to-be at Oak Lawn Community High School is working to help the group raise $60,000, some of which will fund the trip to Bolivia and the rest of which will help fund a hospital there. So far, the group has raised $17,000, so Minnella has his work cut out for him. The organization, which is now open to anyone interested in giving back, has been hosting fundraisers every couple of months since the spring. Motorists may have seen members of the group at major intersections throughout the summer asking for donations. <<read more>>

Student-Parent Handbook Reminders |
Attendance Reminders!
To ensure that students are successful please make school attendance a priority. It is important for students to attend school each day and to receive a good night's sleep. Parents and students should make every effort to avoid scheduling dental and medical appointments during the school day. If an appointment must be made during the school day, efforts should be made to vary the periods missed to attend such appointments.
Pre-Arranged Absence Form
When students need to leave during the school day for situations such as court appearances, funerals, and dental/medical appointments, a Pre-Arranged Absence Form (available online or in the Deans'/Attendance Office) must be completed and submitted prior to the appointment.
Student Deliveries
As part of our building security expectations, the school does not accept phone messages, forgotten gym clothes, lunch money, homework assignments, and projects that need to be delivered to students. Please make sure students leave home fully prepared for school.

Serenity Family Outreach, a local non-profit organization focused on providing support, resources, and hope to individuals and families battling addiction, is poised to take on the growing Heroin epidemic among Chicago students as they head back to school. The organization is hosting a two-part educational series that will explore teenage drug use - answering parents' toughest questions about identifying, preventing, and treating youth drug addiction.
Nick Gore of Bartlett will be the keynote speaker for the first session. A recovering Heroin addict, Gore has appeared on "Oprah Prime," and presents at high schools throughout the Chicagoland area, sharing his struggles and telling his powerful story. The second session will be led by Kathleen Burke, PhD, the former CEO of Robert Crown Center and founder of Strategic Prevention. OLCHS Website Mobile App |
Launched last year, as part of our ongoing commitment to communicate with stakeholders, OLCHS partnered with SchoolMessenger on the development of our very own app. Download the app now for your smartdevice using these links or search for the app by name, Oak Lawn CHSD - in the Apple App Store and Google Play for Android.
The app is designed to provide easy access to school and district information including calendars, sports schedules, notifications, social media, and more. And this is just the beginning. Based on your feedback we envision continuing to build out the app to meet future needs. Download the app and be sure to tell others to do the same! Users are encouraged to email Assistant Principal Joseph McCurdy to suggest content and links that should be added to make the app even more useful. <<read more>>

Skyward Mobile App |
The Skyward Mobile App continues to provide parents with student information at their fingertips. Although Skyward Family Access allows parents to review their student's attendance records, grades, academic history, and discipline from any computer, the Skyward Mobile App provides many of the same features but allows users to easily view the information from a smartdevice. Visit the App Store or Android Market to download the App.
If you need a Skyward Access username/password or need your password reset, please contact Jill Malkowski at 708/741-5611 or jmalkowski@olchs.org.
