First Day of School: Tuesday, August 19

Back to School

The first day of classes for all students is Tuesday, August 19, 2014. Freshmen and transfer students should report to their first-period classroom by 7:45 a.m. for the freshmen/new student orientation program. After the program, freshmen/ transfer students will attend their classes following Bell Schedule "C". Upperclassmen should also follow Bell Schedule "C" and arrive to their first-period class by 8:50 a.m.

The PACE Bus will begin running the OLCHS route on this day according to Bell Schedule "C"; therefore, freshmen/transfer students will need to secure their own morning transportation on this day. The board of education, administration, and staff are very excited about the start of the school year and look forward to welcoming our students on Tuesday. Please begin the school year on the right track and arrive promptly.

Green & White Games: Friday, August 22

The motto of "Once a Spartan, Always a Spartan" is painted over the doors of the main entrance to OLCHS. Many students, athletes, and fans walk right under it each and every day, but Friday, August 22, 2014, is another invitation to make parents and alumni feel a part of this Spartan tradition and motto. The school is hosting Oak Lawn Spartans Fall "Green & White Night" to celebrate the upcoming sports season. It's a night designed to show off many of the exciting teams that are gearing up for the months ahead and involve those in the community.

Changes for the First Week of School

The traditional Schedule/Textbook days were modified this year to an online process. Several items that have been traditionally handled during the schedule/textbook days have been changed in the following manner.

Hallway Lock/Locker. Locks were distributed to freshman students at the Freshman Family Orientation Program and will be distributed on the First Day of School on Tuesday, August 19, 2014. Returning students should use their previous year's lock or purchase a new lock from the dean assistants in the student cafeteria on the first day of school or in the Deans' Office throughout the school year.

ID Photograph. ID's will be distributed during Period 5/6 on Tuesday, August 19, 2014, to students who have a photograph on file.

FYI: Returning students had their ID pictures taken during the last weeks of the 2013-14 school year. Freshmen student photographs were uploaded from their junior high school. Students who do not have a photograph on file will be asked to stop by the Media Center on the first day of school to have their photograph taken. After the first day, photographs will be taken in Room 112.

Schedules. Schedules will be distributed during Period 1/2 on Tuesday, August 19, 2014.

FYI: Students have been allowed to view their schedule one business day after completing the online Skyward Enrollment Verification process.

Student Handbook/Planner. Hardcopies of the 2014-15 Student-Parent Handbook/Planner will be distributed during the PRIDE Class Meetings on Friday, August 22, 2014.

FYI: As part of the online process, a link to an online version of the handbook was provided to families and they were asked to provide an electronic acknowledgement of the handbook/planner.

Textbooks. Students will be issued textbooks during the first few days of school. Please refer to the textbook distribution schedule.

Physical Education Uniform. Physical Education uniforms were sold on campus on August 5, 6, & 13, 2014. Uniforms can also be purchased the first week of school during select lunch periods or at Burbank Sports located at 5500 West 79th Street, Burbank, Illinois, 60459; 708/422-7777.

Yearbook Photographs. Yearbook Photographs will be taken on Thursday, August 21, 2014, during the student's Physical Education/Health/Driver Education class in the Spartan Gym. Seniors should have had their picture taken during the summer at one of the senior portrait sessions on campus. VIP will be on campus again on Wednesday, August 27 and Thursday, August 28, 2014, for senior retakes.

TI-84 Calculators Required

TI 84

Beginning this school year, all students, freshman through seniors, enrolled in a math class are required to have a graphing calculator. The school recommends the Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus graphing calculator. This change is prompted by the ongoing implementation of the Common Core State Standards and the upcoming PARCC Assessment. The calculators can be purchased from any major retailer, and most have specials or deals they run before back-to-school.  Students can get more information from their Math teacher at the beginning of the school year or by contacting Assistant Principal Jeana Lietz at 708/741-5616 or Division Chairperson David Johnson at 708/741-5649.

Serenity Family Outreach Program

Serenity Family Outreach, a local non-profit organization focused on providing support, resources, and hope to individuals and families battling addiction, is poised to take on the growing Heroin epidemic among Chicago students as they head back to school. The organization is hosting a two-part educational series that will explore teenage drug use - answering parents' toughest questions about identifying, preventing, and treating youth drug addiction.

Nick Gore of Bartlett will be the keynote speaker for the first session. A recovering Heroin addict, Gore has appeared on "Oprah Prime," and presents at high schools throughout the Chicagoland area, sharing his struggles and telling his powerful story. The second session will be led by Kathleen Burke, PhD, the former CEO of Robert Crown Center and founder of Strategic Prevention. Burke is a nationally renowned addiction and adolescent development expert.
