Class Schedules Available In Skyward

Class schedules are available within one school-business day of completing the August Enrollment Verification Process in Skyward. Nearly 500 students have already completed the online process. The online process has replaced our traditional August schedule and textbook pick-up days. Families with approved Residency Validation Forms are eligible to complete the online process. If you have not submitted your Residency Validation Form, please submit the documentation to the district office as soon as possible.

Parents who are not familiar with computers are encouraged to complete the online process with the assistance of their son or daughter. Families who do not have internet access or have technical issues with Skyward, may attend one of the following sessions for assistance (Please note, attendees will complete the same online process but on school computers and with the assistance of our staff):

Tuesday, August 5, 2014

10:00 - 2:00 p.m. & 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Wednesday, August 6, 2014

9:00 - 2:00 p.m. & 4:00 - 7:00 p.m

Wednesday, August 13, 2014

Failure to complete the online process by August 14, 2014, will result in a $50.00 late-fee. The summer mailing and related documents are available on the school's website, www.olchs.org.

TI-84 Calculators Required

TI 84

Beginning this school year, all students, freshman through seniors, enrolled in a math class are required to have a graphing calculator. The school recommends the Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus graphing calculator. This change is prompted by the ongoing implementation of the Common Core State Standards and the upcoming PARCC Assessment. The calculators can be purchased from any major retailer, and most have specials or deals they run before back-to-school.  Students can get more information from their Math teacher at the beginning of the school year or by contacting Assistant Principal Jeana Lietz at 708/741-5616 or Division Chairperson David Johnson at 708/741-5649.

Catch the Reading Bug

The English Department believes that reading is not only one of life's simplest pleasures, but also a vital skill that provides a wealth of educational benefits. Because reading is a habit that grows richer with practice, a required summer reading program for English I, English II, and English III offers our Spartan students choice and flexibility to read texts that will interest them. Students enrolled in honors courses will also complete a summer reading assignment. Detailed descriptions of the book choices will be communicated by English teachers and Media Center staff members, and that information can also be found on the school website.

Students should bring the required book to English class during the first week of school. When school begins in August, each student will be asked to respond and reflect on his or her summer reading choice in one of the first assignments of the year. The best way to prepare for success is to read actively, talk about the books with friends and family, take notes, and complete the specified summer reading assignment (available to print at www.olchs.org/academics/english.asp). Happy reading!
