Catch the Reading Bug

The English Department believes that reading is not only one of life's simplest pleasures, but also a vital skill that provides a wealth of educational benefits. Because reading is a habit that grows richer with practice, a required summer reading program for English I, English II, and English III offers our Spartan students choice and flexibility to read texts that will interest them. Students enrolled in honors courses will also complete a summer reading assignment. Detailed descriptions of the book choices will be communicated by English teachers and Media Center staff members, and that information can also be found on the school website.

Students should bring the required book to English class during the first week of school. When school begins in August, each student will be asked to respond and reflect on his or her summer reading choice in one of the first assignments of the year. The best way to prepare for success is to read actively, talk about the books with friends and family, take notes, and complete the specified summer reading assignment (available to print at www.olchs.org/academics/english.asp). Happy reading!
