Spartan Artwork Goes to Washington

Senior Brian Pfister won first place in the 2014 Congressional Art Competition for the Third Congressional District. Pfister submitted a photograph of soldiers lined up in formation at his brother's Air Force graduation. The photograph highlighted wonderful composition and many other artistic elements. Pfister's winning entry will be displayed in the United States Capitol for one year. Congressman Dan Lipinski visited the school to personally congratulate Pfister on his work and to provide two round trip airline tickets to travel to the nation's capitol in June for the exhibition opening. Congratulations Brian! <<read more>>

Catch the Reading Bug

The English Department believes that reading is not only one of life's simplest pleasures, but also a vital skill that provides a wealth of educational benefits. Because reading is a habit that grows richer with practice, a required summer reading program for English I, English II, and English III offers our Spartan students choice and flexibility to read texts that will interest them. Students enrolled in honors courses will also complete a summer reading assignment. Detailed descriptions of the book choices will be communicated by English teachers and Media Center staff members, and that information can also be found on the school website.

Students should bring the required book to English class during the first week of school. When school begins in August, each student will be asked to respond and reflect on his or her summer reading choice in one of the first assignments of the year. The best way to prepare for success is to read actively, talk about the books with friends and family, take notes, and complete the specified summer reading assignment (available to print at www.olchs.org/academics/english.asp). Happy reading!

Pegasus Literary Magazine Celebrates Creativity

Albert Einstein, known worldwide as an intellectual genius, said, "Creativity is contagious, pass it on." Even the smartest of all humans saw the value in creativity. Oak Lawn Community High School's literary magazine, Pegasus, showcases the creativity of its students. This year's issue is now available.

Each year the literary magazine seems to take on its own persona. The 2013-14 publication celebrates the poetic form. Subjects include memories, beauty, colors, love, dreams, sports, and odes to body parts. Beautiful artwork adorns the cover and inside pages to enhance the subjects and themes of the verse. Pegasus sponsor Colleen Conway said, "The Pegasus Club and I are very thankful to the many dedicated and talented OLCHS teachers and students who assisted in making the 2014 Pegasus Literary Magazine the best ever. Mrs. Jepsen and Mrs. Hochstadt were an integral force in encouraging students to submit their literary creations for this magazine. Mrs. Clark and her students allowed us to peruse their art folders and select pieces of their beautiful artwork and photos to compliment our many literary selections. Mrs. Gannon and her 6th hour Intro to Tech class welcomed me into their classroom to instruct and assist the staff in creating the individual pages for our magazine. I feel our literary magazine truly exemplifies the meaning of teamwork." To read this year's issue, go to www.olchs.org

SALT Members Gain a Stronger Sense of Community

On Saturday, May 10, members of the Spartan Athletic Leadership Team (SALT) joined athletic director Kevin McKeown to assist the Village of Oak Lawn in collecting and transporting electronic waste for senior citizens and the disabled. More commonly referred to as "E-Waste" this program was created to allow an opportunity to assist local residents with the proper collection and transportation of their electronic waste to the local recycling center. All together the team traveled to twenty homes within the Village to remove the e-waste. "It was a great experience for our athletes," Kevin McKeown said. "For our students to see how appreciative local senior citizens are of our efforts to assist them gave the students a stronger sense of community, something that will stay with our students far after they graduate."

Leading the pick-up for the village was Jack Lopez with the recycling center. In just a few hours these young men and women were able to help collect and properly discard several tons of e-waste at the Village of Oak Lawn's Recycling Center. The center is located off of 99th and Central Avenue. According to McKeown, "the students really enjoyed the experience and are already looking forward to the fall to help with the village tree-planting initiative."  <<read more>>

School Nurse Receives Accolades for her Efforts Promoting the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy

The Thirteenth Annual National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy took place on May 7, 2014. On the National Day and throughout the month of May, teens nationwide will be asked to visit www.StayTeen.orgto participate in a popular National Day Quiz. The website and quiz delivers teen pregnancy prevention messages and challenges students to think carefully about what they might do "in the moment."

The message of the National Day is simple and straightforward: Sex has consequences.

Organized by The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, the National Day has widespread support from nearly 200 national organizations and media outlets that serve as official National Day partners.

The Nurse's office participated in the promotion by creating a hallway bulletin board display. The display was acknowledged in a state-wide email from the Illinois Department of Public Health.
