The Monday After Prom . . .

Prom

There is a misconception that the Monday after prom is an additional day off for seniors. This is an official school day.

If your student is absent from school on Monday, May 5, 2014, a phone call is required by a parent to verify this absence; otherwise, consequences will be issued for truancy. Please call the attendance office at (708) 741-5860.

Athletic Open Campus

Athletic Open Campus

Attention all future Spartans, come out on Sunday, May 4, for Oak Lawn High School's 1st Annual FREE Athletic Showcase. This event is open to all kids ages 7-14. Don't miss the opportunity to meet the coaches, step out onto the field/court, and participate in live practice drills. Coaches are eager to meet you and share with you all the great thing their programs have to offer. This is also a chance for Mom and Dad to meet the A.D., see the campus, and see a lot of the great things Oak Lawn has to offer in the classroom.

The day will be broken into TWO sessions, a morning session for female athletes, and an afternoon session for male athletes. The Lady Spartan session will start at 8 a.m. In the Spartan gym and conclude at 11:30 a.m. The afternoon Spartan session will start at noon, again in the Spartan gym, and then conclude around 3:30 p.m.

Refreshments will be provided as well as opportunities to win great prizes. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn a little more about Oak Lawn and feel what Spartan PRIDE is all about. Contact Oak Lawn Athletic Director Kevin McKeown at kmckeown@olchs.org / 708-741-5623 for more details. Best part about the whole experience is that it is FREE!  <<more information>>

Relay Rallies for Blitz Week

OLCHS is preparing for its annual Relay for Life event by promoting Blitz Week. The purpose of Blitz Week is to spark excitement for Relay for Life, which will take place on May 17. Relay for Life is a fundraising event that helps communities fight back against cancer. This year's Blitz Week, which will take place May 5-9, highlights this year's theme: Music of the Decades.

Monday, May 5, all faculty, staff and students are encouraged to wear purple. Tuesday, May 6 is Purple Lei Day and Wednesday, May 7 has been named Duct Taping Teachers to the Wall Day, which will take place during all lunch periods. Thursday, May 8 is the ever-popular Room Competition, when all third period classes decorate their rooms in everything purple! The winning room will receive a pizza party. Friday, May 9 celebrates this year's theme, when everyone is encouraged to wear his or her favorite vintage band T-shirt.  <<read more>>

Senior Textbook Collection

Clear Debt

Seniors should follow the textbook collection schedule and return textbooks to the Little Theater by 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2014, to avoid being placed on the debt list.

Furthermore, the last opportunity before graduation for seniors to pay their outstanding debt will be Monday, May 19th, and Tuesday, May 20th, until 3:30 p.m. in the Business office.   Only cash, money order, or credit card payments are accepted, no personal checks.

Failure to pay debts by 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, will place a hold on your diploma and transcripts.  Debts cannot be cleared at graduation practice or at the graduation ceremony.  After Tuesday, May 20th, seniors will have to wait until Thursday, May 22nd, for the next opportunity to clear debts.

SouthtownStar Newspaper features Junior Nick Raymer

Nick Raymer, of Hometown, is not your average 16-year-old. His idea of having fun consists of performing service projects, attending leadership training workshops and mapping out his future.

Raymer is a junior at Oak Lawn Community High School and a graduate of Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 where he attended Hometown Elementary and Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle schools. His favorite subject is history, and he is on the track team.

Some day, Nick would like to be a history teacher, but now his sights are set on enlisting in the Marine Corps after graduation from high school. Before that happens, he wants to become an Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouting.

Nick got interested in Scouting when he was a first grader. A representative from Cub Scout Pack 3682 came to his school to talk to the boys, and Nick asked his parents, Rick and Anita Raymer, if he could join the pack. By age 10, he crossed over into the Boy Scouts and Troop 682, which meets at Our Lady of Loretto Parish in Hometown.

He quickly advanced through the ranks and became involved in leadership training. In 2010, Nick went to National Youth Leadership Training and eventually was inducted into the Order of the Arrow, Scouting's honor society. He later became the Meteu (person in charge of Scout ceremonies) and vice chief of camp promotions (often giving presentations about camp to troops).  <<read more>>

Riley was born with a condition called Goldenhar Syndrome. Despite this condition, Riley led a very typical childhood, participating in dance, ballet, swimming, rollerblading, and hiking. At age 10 it was discovered that she had developed scoliosis. Riley had numerous surgeries on her back and because of complications, Riley sustained a spinal cord injury that left her paralyzed. She spent over 100 days in the hospital and was able to regain control of her arms but she remains paralyzed from the chest down. <<read more>>
