Girls Basketball Season Leaves Lasting Impression of Success |
When the horn sounded last Thursday night at Bloom Trail, it signified a 67-62 loss to Marian Catholic in the Illinois High School Association Sectional Championship, but the legend and memories that the 2013-14 girls basketball team created will last forever in Oak Lawn Community High School history. This team set a record for wins in a season with 28, advanced the farthest in postseason play of any Spartan girls basketball team and set a bucket load of individual game, season and career records. They will not be forgotten.
"This group of girls brought Oak Lawn girls basketball to another level," head coach Janet Meyers said. "These seniors have set the bar high for future teams. We set a goal of advancing to at least the sectionals in the post season and the girls worked hard to achieve that goal."
"They are a great bunch of girls, they have a lot of heart. When things got tough, they wouldn't give up, they kept their composure and rallied back. I am so proud of the girls and all they accomplished this year. This is truly a season that I will never forget."
With a core group of upperclassmen, sparkling personalities and Spartan Pride, this group of girls went places Oak Lawn teams have only dreamed of. Behind the leadership of career scoring leader LaTondra Brooks, fellow seniors Jannah Mamoud, Brooke Annerino, DeeDee Shatat, and Kelsey Luckett, they captured the support of the Spartan faithful. Brianna Markusic, Dana Greene, Alyssa Radoicic, Kaylee Gattone, and Kellie O'Connor added to the full-court domination.
The team won the IHSA Regional title, the South Suburban Conference Red Championship, the Glenbard East Tournament, the Oak Lawn Holiday Tournament and amassed a final record of 28-2. <<read more>>

OLCHS Celebrates Culture |
OLCHS values its diversity. One way to celebrate culture in its community is through the Global Society Fest. This year's Global Society Fest was the collected effort of many staff members and students. Several events took place during the week of February 18-21.
On Tuesday, an international food tasting kicked off the celebration. During their lunch periods, students sampled food from Argentina and the Middle East. Throughout the week students were challenged with a Find the Flag scavenger hunt in which they searched for flags from around the world throughout the school. On Thursday, the International Club hosted a World Wear Fashion Show in the Little Theater during all lunch periods. World Wear is a global style show featuring clothing and music representing the cultures of Vietnam, Japan, China, Mexico, Senegal, and Ireland. International Club moderator Pat Land reflected, "Our students did an outstanding job of showcasing and sharing their cultures. It was a fun way to learn about customs and costumes." Finally, on Friday, Latin and African American dance performances took place in the gym. Students expressed the significance of their heritage through spirited moves and music. <<read more>>

Hannum School is Shaving Again |
"Shave for a Cure" is coming back to Hannum School this March. What a great way to show our children that even though they are small...they can be mighty! Hannum School hosted their first ever St. Baldrick's Foundation fundraiser last year. Nearly 50 students and adults shaved their heads in solidarity with children who lose their hair due to chemotherapy. The head shaving event was an incredible success-raising over $15,600.00 to help fund childhood cancer research.
