All year long student-athletes put it all on the line on the field, in the pool, or on the court. Now, it's time for them to put on a show all for themselves. The Ultimate Spartan is back and six senior boys will battle for the honor of being named the school's ultimate student athlete.
On Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at 7:30 pm in the Auditorium Gymnasium, Gabe Lira, Kurt Kuzur, Kyle Kuzur, Sean Mottl, Mitch Swatek and Ed Varela will compete in formal wear, beach wear and talent to see who carries home the trophy and recognition for all of their hard work.
Tickets are available at Oak Lawn, from the guys or from any softball player and cost just $5 in advance and $7 at the door.
Last year was a blast, and this year promises to keep the good times rolling. The judges include an Ultimate Spartan competitor from last year and the 2012 Homecoming King Sean Altenburg, Oak Lawn girls volleyball head coach Dennis McNamara, Athletic secretary Darla DeHaan, and Chicago Sun Times Preps writer Bill Harrison.
In addition to on stage competition, the competitors will do a group dance, fans will see personal interviews and the softball program will entertain the crowd. So come join the softball program and hosts Bill Gerny and Pat DiFilippo for a fun night. <<read more>>

PRIDE Committee Recognizes Mo Shatat
|
The PRIDE committee is proud to highlight one of the 2014 PRIDE Award winners, Mohammad Shatat. Shatat, a senior, was nominated by physical education teacher Doreen Piro for his efforts and dedication related to the 2013 Sully Shuffle.
The Sully Shuffle is an annual 5K through the streets of Oak Lawn to support Parkinson's Disease research on behalf of Skip Sullivan, retired OLCHS teacher and current coach. Shatat was one of many OLCHS students who volunteered for the event, yet his dedication became extraordinary when he gave over ten hours of his free time to ensure the event was a success. Shatat had already completed his 24 hour service requirement for graduation, and gave freely for no personal reward or gain!
When asked why he was willing to give up much of his spare time and weekend, Shatat simply replied "It's for Sully." That answer resonated with Doreen Piro, one of the event coordinators. She explained, "The idea that a boy that age has enough respect for someone to give that kind of effort is inspiring to me." Shatat shows his dedication in other areas as well. He maintains a 3.4 GPA, is a member of the varsity Boys Volleyball team, and participates as a student athletic trainer. He embodies Spartan PRIDE on a daily basis. <<read more>>

Dance Team Continues Rise Toward Top
|
It all started way back in July when the Dance Team attended the Universal Dance Association Camp for a week, and it culminated last weekend in a second-straight trip to the Illinois High School Association State Finals held at US Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, IL. When it was all over, the Spartans improved from last year's finish and placed 27th.
The road to the State Finals was a long journey and included the week-long camp, various competitions (which began in November), a sixth-place finish at the South Suburban Conference Red meet, the team's best-ever fifth-place finish at the IHSA Sectional, and this past weekend's fine showing.
"The team earned the best placements in my 10 years of coaching," Dance Head Coach Jessica Shekleton said. "The girls were ecstatic to learn that they did even better than last year. These girls are 27th in their division in the state of Illinois."
"This team is a phenomenal group of girls. They are sweet, responsible, they work hard, do well in school, and they are dedicated to each other. They spend countless hours practicing, performing at home games, fundraising, and even putting together a charity clothing drive just because they wanted to do that. Coach Ryan Brandt and I both agree they make us laugh every day and have made us incredibly proud this year."
The team members include Hannah Papaleo, Samantha Cholke, Becky Mackowiak, Andrea Pacetti, Anna Oswald, Patrycja Kucharska, Lupe Navarrete, Alice Bustamantez, Bailey Tobin, Emma McMeekin, Valerie Schlee, and Alyssa Bonk.
"It hasn't been easy," Shekleton said. "There are times during the season that the team feels frustrated, overwhelmed, and struggles with technique or complex choreography that we give them, but they have definitely come out on top. They put Oak Lawn on the map in the competitive dance world, and this is a tremendous accomplishment for us."
"I told the girls before they walked on to the performance floor at State, under the bright lights, before an arena of cheering dance fans, I absolutely love coaching this team and can't even express how proud I am of them. They have earned every bit of this spotlight and recognition. This is what reward feels like after a lot of hard work. And in my eyes, it couldn't come to a better team." <<read more>>

Candlelight Bowl to Fund Tim Nickos Scholarship
|
Tim Nickos was an amazing individual who lived every day to the fullest by inspiring and motivating others through his contagious smile and great sense of humor. Tim was to be the captain of the Oak Lawn Community High School varsity swim team his senior year and was also a proud member of the OLCHS band. Most importantly, Tim always provided for everyone around him. Tim was tragically taken from us in his sleep at the young age of 17. He had a heart condition called Cardiomegaly (enlarged heart) that went undiagnosed. This led to cardiac arrhythmia, which took his life on June 28, 2011.
A Candlelight Bowl will take place on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 8:00p.m. at Fox Bowl, located at 1101 Butterfield Road in Wheaton, IL. Money raised will fund The Tim Nickos Memorial Scholarship, which will grant one $2500 scholarship to an OLCHS student to help with college tuition. The winner will be announced at the Spring Sports Award Ceremony.
Tickets are $25 for students or $30 for adults and include three games of bowling and dinner. There will also be a cash bar, raffle prizes and split the pot. Additional information is available on the OLCHS website. <<read more>>
