 Spartans Donate Blood

Adam Ahmad was one of the 100+ students who donated blood today. Each year, LifeSource offers area high schools the opportunity to earn valuable scholarship money. Oak Lawn Community High School has earned the scholarship money for the past five years. Schools who wish to participate must host a minimum of two blood drives per year. Parents and community members can also have their donation credited to their local high school every time they donate at a community donor center or mobile blood drive. By simply providing the OLCHS donor code of OL94, the school receives credit for the donation. Please refer to the LifeSource website for a convenient donor center at http://www.lifesource.org and be sure to mention donor code OL94 when donating blood.

Parents and community members are encouraged to visit a community donor center or mobile blood drive when eligible. Individuals are eligible to donate blood every 56 days. Be sure to mention donor code OL94 when donating blood.

Paint the Gym Purple:  February 7, 2014

OLCHS will host its Relay for Life for the 12th year in a row! Relay for Life is an organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for cancer research. This year's Relay for Life will take place earlier than usual on Saturday, March 8, 2014. Per Relay tradition, the faculty, staff, and students will paint the gym purple by wearing purple T-shirts during the boys' basketball games against Reavis High School on February 7, 2014, against the Reavis Rams. The sophomore game begins at 5:00 p.m. followed by the varsity game at 7:00 p.m.

According to TJ Zuzga, Relay for Life Sponsor, "The Paint the Gym Purple events have generated a lot of attention during the past few years and the committee is looking forward to another successful evening. Reavis High School is also promoting the event with their students and fans. The night promises to be well attended and should reinforce the athletic rivalry between the two schools. The proceeds from the event benefit the American Cancer Society."

Fans are encouraged to drape themselves in purple attire. A limited number of t-shirts will be on sale prior to the game. Students can purchase t-shirts in the student cafeteria during the week of the event.  <<read more>>

Anime Sci-Fi Club Cookin' Up Excitement

Over 25 members of Anime Sci-Fi Club recently attended a special meeting where the members prepared, served, and ate Japanese food! From scratch, students made mochi, a Japanese delicacy featuring rice flour and red bean paste, as well as numerous Popin Cookin candies. Most of the bite-sized items were purchased from Sunrise Oriental in Oak Lawn.

Students were also able to test their culinary skills at Cooking Mama, a cookery simulation video game on Wii where players are tasked with "cooking" various meals, including chopping vegetables and flipping items in pans.
Sophomore Isabella Welsh, Anime Sci-Fi Club Vice-President, explained her favorite part of the event was "watching everyone work together and have their own fun." She believes activities like this increase bonding among club members and break the monotony of regular meetings.

Anime is a form of popular Japanese animated productions, usually featuring hand drawn or computer animation. Colorful graphics, vibrant characters, and fantastic themes often characterize the work. The club is sponsored by Jamie Atkus.  <<read more>>

Bowling Benefit Raises Money for Scholarship Fund

Family and friends will gather to honor the late Megan Hurckes with a birthday bowling benefit at Arena Lanes on Saturday, February 1, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. The friends and family of Megan Hurckes are honoring her birthday by participating in one of her favorite past times -bowling.

Megan is the late daughter of former Oak Lawn trustee Jerry Hurckes. Since Megan's death at age ten in 2009, the Hurckes have celebrated Megan's birthday by raising money for a good cause. The Hurckes Family is taking over Arena Lanes to raise money for the Megan Hurckes Scholarship Fund. Rather than mourn her death, the family started the fund as a way to celebrate Megan's life and keep her name and memory alive. "When Megan passed away we asked people not to give flowers but donate to a memorial fund," Jerry Hurckes said.

The family have raised over $40,000, which has gone to high school students continuing on to college, grammar school students going to high school, the Children's Museum and Westside Baseball.

The bowling benefit/birthday party kicks off at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Arena Lanes, at 4700 W. 103rd St. (103rd Street and Cicero Avenue).  <<read more>>

Oak Lawn CHS - there's an app for that!

As part of our ongoing commitment to communicate with stakeholders, OLCHS partnered with SchoolMessenger on the development of our very own app. Download the app now for your smartphone or smartdevice using these links or search for the app by name, Oak Lawn CHS - in the Apple App Store and Google Play for Android.

The app is designed to provide easy access to school and district information including calendars, sports schedules, notifications, social media, and more. And this is just the beginning. Based on your feedback we envision continuing to build out the app to meet future needs. Download the app and be sure to tell others to do the same!

Email Assistant Principal Mr. McCurdy at jmccurdy@olchs.org to suggest content that should be added to make the app more useful.  <<read more>>
