Boys Hoops Game at TF North to Raise Money

for Tornado Victims

Friday night in Calumet City the boys basketball team will play TF North on the court. However, off the court there will be another effort going on - one to help raise money in support of the tornado victims in southern Illinois.

As the boys battle at the rim, all money raised through 50-50 raffles and at the concession stands will be sent to help out the victims and families of victims affected by the tornadoes last month. So, both teams are asking fans to help support the teams and a great cause.  <<read more>>

Final Exams will be administered on:

Wednesday, December 18,
Thursday, December 19, and
Friday, December 20

Please note: Wednesday, December 18, 2013, is not a typical Wednesday late-start day. Final exams begin each day at 7:55 a.m. The final exam grade is 20% of the semester grade in most courses. On Final Exam Days, students are only required to be on campus for exam and 'review session' periods unless the student is exempt from the final exam or if the exam or 'review session' is a scheduled study hall period.

Students are not required to attend full-period study halls, lunch/study halls, or Access Period study halls. This includes students assigned to mandatory resource rooms, PSAE Prep classes, Guided Study Hall, LRP Access, ESL Access, and as student aides. Students who have a study hall on their schedule that happens to fall in the "middle" of an exam day have the option of leaving the building or staying in the student cafeteria until their next exam. Students who stay on campus during unassigned times must report to the student cafeteria. Final Exam Schedule

Operation Santa Claus Tradition Continues

Mrs. Ellen Kruger, a math teacher, will continue her school-wide tradition of Operation Santa Claus. 2013 marks the ninth year of Operation Santa Claus at OLCHS. From December 2 to December 13, Christmas trees are located in the main office by the mailboxes, the faculty café, and the student cafeteria. They are loaded with candy cane ornaments. Each candy cane has a gift tag identifying a person, his/her age, and desired wish or need. Wishes often include clothing, gym shoes, small appliances, gas cards, grocery cards, musical instruments or toys.

Students and staff can choose as many candy canes as they wish and purchase the gifts. Some classes are even collecting spare change to assist in purchasing the supplies and gifts. One Oak Lawn family needs two twin beds or one full bed; gently used, clean beds are acceptable. Wrapping paper, bags, gift boxes, ribbons and gift tags are also needed and can be dropped off in room 215.

Gifts are due to room 215 by Friday, December 13. On Wednesday, December 18, the Operation Santa Claus team hosts a Wrap Party and then delivers the gifts to the families.  <<read more>>

Girls Basketball Aims to Help Great Cause With Pink Out Game

As the holiday season is upon us, the Oak Lawn girls basketball team is continuing to give its support to a worthwhile cause. Thursday, December 12, the Spartans will host their annual Pink Out Game to help raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer. The annual Pink Out event will feature the girls varsity, sophomore and freshmen teams along with the freshmen boys. The program will be selling T-shirts for $10 each.

This year it is truly a personal endeavor as the proceeds will go to head coach Janet Meyers' sister Mary Haubenreiser, who was diagnosed in October with Stage 4 inflammatory breast cancer. It is a rare form of breast cancer that spreads quickly.  "Mary worked as a teacher assistant at OLCHS for several years and now is the Director of Students at Excel Academy of Englewood," Meyers said. "She is a single mom with five-year-old twins. Please consider supporting this event. It will be an exciting night of basketball for a great cause."

Help support a great cause, help support a positive message and help support the girls basketball program. Come out on Thursday, December 12, 2013, and help raise breast cancer awareness.

The girls' will also take the opportunity to recognize other cancer survivors. Entertainment for the night's contest includes performances by the dance team and pep band. Cash prizes will be awarded to fans dressed in the best Pink-Out outfits, as well as a superfan tug-of-war contest. Come out and cheer on the Lady Spartans and enjoy the fun-filled activities.  See you in the Spartan gym starting at 4:30 with the freshman game, followed by the sophomore game at 5:30, and the varsity game at 7 p.m.  Go Spartans!  <<read more>>

Spartans Catch Fire!

Over 55 Spartans (students & staff alike!) attended the Media Center's after school fieldtrip to see the movie Catching Fire at AMC Chicago Ridge. Catching Fire is the sequel in the outrageously popular Hunger Games trilogy, an exciting young adult novel series by Suzanne Collins. Students enjoyed a pizza party and trivia in the Media Center beforehand. Some students even arrived dressed in their favorite Hunger Games gear.

Every Tuesday before Thanksgiving the Media Center takes an after school fieldtrip to see a film based on a popular book. Past events included trips to see Harry Potter and all the Twilight movies. With Catching Fire's cliffhanger ending, no doubt the group will be back to see Mockingjay in 2014!

Event chaperones were Gloria Barrera, Pam Duff, Erin Lee, Eileen Jones, Kathy Massura, Joe McCurdy, Jessica Nickless, Jennifer Sidlow, and retired OLCHS staff members Dorothy Michels and Cathy Morrin.   <<read more>>
