New Faculty and Staff Join the Spartan Ranks |
Each school year brings with it new faculty and staff. Some are familiar faces with new positions and some are brand new to the building. This school year Oak Lawn Community High School welcomed six new members to its staff: Matt Arthur, TJ Zuzga, Bob Habersat, Erin Lee, Abdullah Hasan and Gloria Barrera.
Both Matt Arthur and TJ Zuzga return to OLCHS this year with different titles. Matt Arthur returns as a special education teacher after two years as an instructional aide in the special ed department. Matt also continues his work this year as head sophomore football coach and head junior varsity wrestling coach. Matt quotes Yoda as his motto: "Do or do not. There is no try." TJ Zuzga, former full-time substitute, is now a science teacher. TJ will continue his role as head boys and girls swimming coach and Relay for Life volunteer. What most people don't know about TJ is that his first career was in business and he worked as a HR Rep and Benefits Analyst for five years prior to starting his degree in Biology. <<read more>>

Media Center to Host Family Reading Night |
The Media Center will host its first-ever Family Reading Night on November 21, 2013, 7:00-8:00pm. The event will be an evening book club for students, parents, staff, and the community (all members of the "Spartan Family!"). There will be discussion and activities based around the popular novel The Fault in Our Stars by award-winning author John Green. The book is an insightful, ambitious, and heartbreaking story which explores the funny/tragic business of being alive and in love. It's a rare bestseller aimed at teens and adults.
Family Reading Night is in conjunction with Illinois Reads, a new statewide campaign to promote reading for all Illinois citizens created under the auspices of the Illinois Reading Council. Illinois Reads focuses on reading at school, as well as at home. Residents across the state from Rockford to Carbondale will be partaking in upcoming family literacy nights. The culmination event is a statewide celebration of literacy on the same evening as the book club. All book club participants must register - click here. Click here for event flyer.

Cuculich, Murley Claim Regional Honors |
When it comes to the IHSA Regional Golf meet, both Joe Cuculich and Brandon Murley know what to expect. After all, they both earned All-Regional Honors as juniors. This year, they both repeated the feat.
These seniors have been a major part of the nucleus that holds the team together all year. "Joe has played varsity golf all four years, while Brandon has played varsity for three years," said boys' golf head coach Pat Mayer. "Joe, Brandon and another senior in Matt Dunne have carried the team all year. The seniors were real leaders this year and we will miss them. They were like assistant coaches to the younger players."
The regional honors top off great careers for these Spartans on the fairway. In fact, Cuculich was also an all-conference golfer for the last two years in the South Suburban Conference Red Division as well. <<read more>>

2013 Rayjus Outdoors-Oak Lawn Community High School Bass Tournament |
Excitement was running high for over 170 high school anglers from 21 schools from across northern Illinois who assembled at the Des Plaines Conservation Area. Rayjus Outdoors, Unique Bassmasters, and the Spartan Fishing Team partnered together to present the 2013 Rayjus Outdoors - Oak Lawn Community High School Bass Tournament on the Kankakee/Des Plaines River at the Des Plaines Conservation Area.
A steady stream of teams began to arrive to the conservation area at 5:20 a.m. As teams registered, each student angler received a gift bag from Rayjus Outdoors containing merchandise from Mercury Marine, Power Team Lures, Ferrara Candy, Bizz Baits, Cruncher Baits, Culprit, Berkley, and Lake Fork Tackle. By 7:05 a.m, all 48 boats were in the water and the tournament was underway by 7:18 a.m.
The weather on October 12 was variable. The morning started sunny and temperatures quickly reached 70 degrees. By late morning, however, the clouds rolled in, winds picked up, temperatures dropped, and and every so often, a cloud would open up with a steady rain. Despite the crazy weather, 33 boats out of the 48 taking part in the event weighed fish. <<read more>>

Spartans Hosted SSC Publications Workshop |
On Friday, October 18, 2013, members of the Journalism Team hosted the South Suburban Conference (SSC) Publications Workshop at Moraine Valley Community College. Nearly 400 students from 14 schools attended the annual event and participated in various workshops designed to improve a wide range of skills - writing, editing, interviewing, photography, layout, to name a few. In addition to the workshops, select students from each school participated in a variety of Illinois High School Association (IHSA) mock competitions. The keynote speaker was FOX Chicago sportscaster, and Oak Lawn Community High School graduate, Lou Canellis.
Lou Canellis shares his enthusiasm about sports with Chicagoans every night on FOX Chicago News at Nine. He has followed local teams his entire life and has an extensive sports background. In addition to his work on FOX Chicago, Canellis is living the dream with the Chicago Bears. He is the TV host for all five of the TV shows the Bears own and produce. Canellis anchors Bears Game Day Live and Bears Game Night Live on FOX Sunday mornings and Sunday nights, along with Bears Recap and Bears Blitz on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays on Comcast Sportsnet.
Canellis has been going to Bears game since he was four-years-old, and has been a season ticket holder since he was six-years-old. Sweet Lou's expertise on the Bears can also be heard on the Roe Conn Show on WLS Radio, 890 AM, Mondays and Fridays. Canellis' first dream job was as a member of the Chicago Bulls broadcasts on TV and radio. Canellis worked on the sidelines and is well-known for his post-game chats with Michael Jordan. He's also an expert on real estate, hosting the TV show "Making Money in Real Estate." A Loyola University graduate, Canellis considers himself a "South Sider," having been born and raised in Oak Lawn. Canellis was inducted in the Oak Lawn Community High School's Alumni Hall of Fame in 1998.

Beauty and the Beast |
OLCHS will continue its tradition of excellence this fall with its production of Beauty and the Beast. Beauty and the Beast tells the story of a young prince, who is cursed by an enchantress because of the lack of love in his heart. He must find a girl who will love him in spite of his looks before the last petal of an enchanted rose falls. Director Billy Denton said, "As the song goes, this is a 'tale as old as time.' After seeing this show years ago, I knew it would be a staple of high school theater and I'm proud to be directing this production at OLCHS. From the songs to the costumes to the special effects, it's going to be a great show and I know the students can't wait to show the community."
Performances will take place Thursday, October 24 through Saturday, October 26 at 7:00 p.m. A special children's matinee will also take place on Saturday, October 26 at 2:00 p.m. where children will have the opportunity to be a part of the show and get their picture taken and receive autographs with Belle, the Beast, and the other enchanted objects. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Tickets can be purchased through the ticket hotline at 708-424-5200 ext. 5920. <<read more>>
