Spartan Compact |
-The first in a series of articles
In an effort to identify the roles of parents, students, and staff members in providing the best learning opportunities within the school-community, Oak Lawn Community High School developed a Spartan Compact to reinforce the school's Mission, Vision, and Value Statements. The Compact delineates the expectations of all members of the Spartan community. Superintendent/Principal Mike Riordan said, "Our students' educational achievement is most successful when students, staff, and parents work together to support our school's mission. The Spartan Compact will clarify the key roles and responsibilities of our students, staff, and parents, and will strengthen the synergistic bonds among these three important groups."
As a Spartan Parent, I will...
1. Share my education/behavior expectations with my student and reinforce positive learning habits at home.
- Encourage regular daily attendance and ensure my student is at school on time.
- Review the school calendar to avoid scheduling appointments and planning trips on school days.
- Realize the importance of completing homework and establishing a study routine at home.
- Provide my student with an area at home that is conducive to learning.
- Talk with my student about school on a regular basis.
- Teach my student to treat others with respect and empathy.
2. View school communications as two-way and contact staff members without hesitation.
- Read communications and newsletters received from the school and follow up with staff members for additional information.
- Monitor my student's grades and request assistance if needed to access the online grade book program.
- Communicate with teachers and school officials about my student if there are concerns and request meetings with staff as needed.
- Notify the school of changes to my contact information.
3. Participate in school-related activities that support my student's learning efforts and assist my student in
becoming a life-long learner.
- Volunteer when possible (not only at OLCHS, but also complete service hours with my student at sites within the community).
- Attend parent-teacher conferences, special education placement meetings, and other school-requested meetings.
- Attend curriculum nights, guidance programs, and parent seminars.
- Attend school functions that promote my student's current success, future endeavors, and personal well-being.
- Encourage my student to visit colleges and post-secondary learning opportunities.
4. Encourage my student to take an active role in the school-community.
- Encourage and support my student's interest and participation in academic, athletic, and extracurricular endeavors.
- Encourage my student to begin service hours during freshman year and to continue earning service hours each semester.
5. Embody SPARTAN PRIDE.

Beauty and the Beast |
OLCHS will continue its tradition of excellence this fall with its production of Beauty and the Beast. Beauty and the Beast tells the story of a young prince, who is cursed by an enchantress because of the lack of love in his heart. He must find a girl who will love him in spite of his looks before the last petal of an enchanted rose falls. Director Billy Denton said, "As the song goes, this is a 'tale as old as time.' After seeing this show years ago, I knew it would be a staple of high school theater and I'm proud to be directing this production at OLCHS. From the songs to the costumes to the special effects, it's going to be a great show and I know the students can't wait to show the community."
Performances will take place Thursday, October 25 through Saturday, October 27 at 7:00 p.m. A special children's matinee will also take place on Saturday, October 27 at 2:00 p.m. where children will have the opportunity to be a part of the show and get their picture taken and receive autographs with Belle, the Beast, and the other enchanted objects. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Tickets can be purchased through the ticket hotline at 708-424-5200 ext. 5920. <<read more>>

Internal and External Suspensions |
The deans' office would like to take this opportunity to explain the district's tier two and tier three discipline interventions, specifically internal and external suspensions. Internal suspensions are normally held on Wednesday's in Room 19A. Students who serve internal for the day, or a portion thereof, are able to complete all of their academic assignments and receive full credit. It is the student's responsibility to request those assignments before serving their internal suspension. Students failure to serve an internal suspension may result in an external suspension. Infractions that may result in an internal include, but are not limited to, repeated cell phone violations, harassment, minor acts of aggressive behavior, and repeated class cuts, tardies, and partial absences.
External suspensions result in a temporary exclusion of the student from school for a period of one to ten days. In cases where the student is referred to the Board of Education for expulsion, the Board may, pending final action, continue a student's suspension for a period in excess of ten days. Parent contact, which may include a meeting at school, must be made prior to the student's return to school. Students who serve an external suspension for four or more days are eligible to receive credit for homework and other daily assignments. The student must schedule all make-up tests and quizzes within two school days upon their return. Infractions that result in an external suspension include, but are not limited to, aggressive verbal and/or physical behavior (threatening and fighting), harassment, bullying, gross misconduct, gross insubordination, gang-related activity, theft, and/or possession of a weapon on campus. Please feel free to contact your student's dean with any questions or concerns.
