 PRESIDENT'S MONTHLY NOTE

I have to admit I have been enjoying the unseasonably warm weather that has been with us of late.  My kids have even come home from school a few times and said they didn't have to wear the snow pants out to recess.  That is exciting for them because it means half the time getting dressed and undressed which equates to more time to play! I hope all of you are enjoying the weather as well.

In January we had a very successful networking meeting.   Thank you to MESA for sponsoring and running their eight minute networking. The members had very positive feedback in regards to this event.  We are looking forward to our February meeting where Denise Nelson will be presenting Trends in Health Care.  I for one am excited to hear about new and innovative ways to work with seniors especially with the aging of the population.  The Colony of Eden Prairie will be sponsoring this meeting.  We are excited to see everyone there.

As a reminder we are in the renewal process for 2015.  If you haven't renewed yet you can easily renew online at www.seniorworkers.com or at the meeting in February.

MASWA CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COMMUNITY

Whenever possible, the MASWA board - on behalf of our membership - continues to contribute to our senior community.  Because of our commitment to keeping our expenses low (free/low cost speakers at membership meetings, meeting sponsors, etc.) and being fiscally responsible with our revenue (membership dues and conference fees) we are able to donate to one or two organizations each year.  The board chooses and votes on organizations that we feel use the money to directly benefit seniors in the Minneapolis area.   This past December, we were able to contribute $1,500.00 to Senior Community Services and The Homeless Shelter in downtown Minneapolis at First Covenant Church.  Senior Community Services planned to use the money for their chore services program for seniors that helps them with shoveling, raking and mowing.  The homeless shelter was seeing an increase in the amount of seniors that they are serving and were going to be sure that they had the resources they need this winter (boots, hats, coats, mittens, etc.).  Checks were presented to Deb Taylor, Executive Director of Senior Community Services and Norm Blagman, Director at First Covenant Minneapolis.  On behalf of the MASWA board, we want to thank you for the opportunity to support these two programs this year.
