Finally, Spring is here! Hopefully it won't be long before we turn off the heaters, crack the windows, and see the first signs of a new season. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you at the March membership meeting where we will hear Kay King present on the stigma of mental illness and don't forget about the Spring Luncheon coming up in May!

TOPIC: Make it Okay - The Stigma of Mental Illness
Presenters: Kay King

Kay King is Director of the Older Adults Program at the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Minnesota (NAMI Minnesota). 

 

King is the former Executive Director of a retirement community in the Twin Cities that offers both independent and assisted living services. She managed a home health care agency and is a long-time volunteer with seniors.

 

She is also a family educator who teaches NAMI's Family-to-Family 12-week education course and is the State Trainer for family class teachers.

 

King is a family member whose grandmother, mother, sister and niece (four generations) lived/lives with a mental illness.   

The presentation will cover the following areas:

  • Understand mental illnesses
  • Learn how we visualize, think and talk about mental illness and how the media portrays them
  • Understand recovery
  • Learn about NAMI and its resources

PRESIDENT'S MONTHLY NOTE

Is spring ever going to come to Minnesota? Although the weather isn't cooperating there are plans being made for something I look forward to each year: the MASWA Spring Luncheon. The Members at Large committee consistently provides a great afternoon of networking, an entertaining and educational speaker, delicious food and many participants walk away with an awesome door prize. I am encouraging you to attend on May 15th as this year promises to be equally as great.

 

I am also proud of our continuing support and relationship with St. Paul Senior Workers Association (SPSWA). Although our two organizations are separate, and as of January 2014 have two separate websites, we remain dedicated to serving seniors throughout the Twin Cities. Our joint committees (the Fall Aging Conference and Public Policy) are busy planning the events for 2014. The SPSWA is having their spring conference on April 8th and you can find more information regarding their event on their website (stpseniorworkers.org) or go to our website www.seniorworkers.org and use the link created for easy access to their site. We hope to see many of the SPSWA members at our luncheon and feel blessed to be a part of a community made up of so many committed professionals. So, even if I can't see any green grass or the tulips coming up - I feel confident that spring is going to come, I hope it is here by our luncheon on May 15th!

MASWA MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION
 

To all new and old members, what a great turn out at the last meeting, 75 total!  We have a few key things we want you all to know.

 

First, PLEASE BE SURE YOU HAVE ALL YOUR PERSONAL DATA ON THE WEBSITE.  We have quite a few who are missing addresses, phone numbers and type of business etc.  This is very important if you want your information to display on our website under our categories like "home care" or "Adult Day Services" etc.   Also, we need your addresses, phone numbers so we can mail invitations to upcoming events and members can contact you.  To check if your information is up to date and fully populated, just log in using your password.  If you forgot the password then click on "lost password" and you will be able to enter your email and it will be sent to you.  Do this as soon as possible so your information will appear on the website.

 

Second, since we have so many members attending, and our goal is to have a great informational meeting as well as networking event, we ask that during introductions you say only your name and company name.  We will have a table set up as you walk in to place business information, announcements, job openings etc. We would like to give our speakers the full hour for their presentations, and stay within our time frame of 2:30-4:00pm. We will gently ask you to sit down if you get too wordy!!! NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!

 

Third and final- Please don't forget to take leftover business information with you  after each meeting. We do not have storage space at the church.
