Issue: # 12December 2013

The holiday season is upon us bringing the usual crowded malls, busy schedules and parties with friends and family. Somewhere in the craziness we hope you can find a bit of quiet time to reflect on the year that has passed. Individually, we've impacted seniors and their families, one by one. Collectively, we've impacted the community, the policy makers, and the issues that affect our clients. We say goodbye to 2013, a year packed with change, dissension and growth. And we welcome 2014, bright with promise, opportunities and new ideas to continue making a difference in the aging industry. Thank you for being part of MASWA this year.

DECEMBER MEMBERSHIP MEETING

Joint Public Policy December Forum
Tuesday, December 10th
2:30pm - 4:00pm

Minnesota State Capitol
75 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
Room 112
St. Paul, MN 55155

Greeting Members;

Well it is official; our December Joint Public Policy meeting will be held at our State Capitol. We are very excited about this opportunity to meet in the same place that our government meets when they make their plans for us all.

In keeping with our focus we are honored to have Nick Zerwass, the District 30A State Representative as our speaker. He serves on the Health & Human Services Finance Committee, so will be well versed in the matters that concern us most. This will be your chance to meet with a currently serving legislature and get information about what the plans are going to be. Bring your questions, since there will be time for Q & A available.

The meeting will be held in room #112, on the first floor of the Capitol building. We are not allowed to bring food or beverages into the building, so don't skip lunch that day, or stop at Starbuck's on your way.

The challenge will be the parking. There is limited space in the front of the Capitol, which has meters and I believe accepts credit cards for payments. Other metered space in along the streets nearby.

My suggestion would be to car pool to a nearby lot; maybe at Sears, or Bethesda Hospital and then drive one car over so that you all are close. If need be we might also consider running a little shuttle back and forth from Sears to the Capitol. Please let me hear your thoughts so that we can plan accordingly.

See you Tuesday at 2:30!

Hot off the presses: I just found out that there is a tunnel from the State Office Building to the Capitol. Members can park for free in the Sears parking lot (NE side) walk across the street to the State office building and then walk through the tunnel to the Capitol. It will still be a walk, but you won't freeze!

PRESIDENT'S MONTHLY NOTE

Beth Nemec

I am always shocked how fast the time flies in the month of December. Calendars fill up so quickly with added social events and last minute projects that got put off until the end of the year. There are also all of the holiday tasks that need to be completed - no wonder everyone wants to celebrate when the New Year arrives! I guess it is good to know that MASWA is consistent with the same issues. We are trying to wrap up some loose ends - specifically regarding our website - and are looking forward to starting fresh in 2014.

We have a board consisting of dedicated professionals that are ready to take on the objectives identified at our board retreat. The three biggies are: strengthening our written infrastructure (including committee descriptions and duties); exploring our financial processes and expanding the use of our website for our members to create additional value. Please let me or any of our board members know if there are any questions that we can answer for you or anything you would like us to address.

I hope you are able to spend time with your family and friends this holiday season - I look forward to working with you in 2014.

Sincerely,

Beth Nemec
