Hello Brewster Day Camp,

Happy May! For camp people working this month, we look forward and we look back - double checking multiple lists while answering the questions: "What have we accomplished? What is left to do? Are we PREPARED? Is anyone ever really ready?!?

To answer that last question, I offer this little story: I never met my husband's maternal grandmother, as I began dating her grandson just a few short months after she left this earth. For the past twenty-four-and-a-half years, I have worn her simple gold wedding band which she wore for fifty-four years. This tiny circle needed no adjustments to fit my finger perfectly - a small symbol of the many things that we share - though time and distance has always separated us. I often think about her legacy and how she lives on around me every day in the genetics of my husband - her grandson, and two of her great grandsons, our boys. I am told that she often said, "Easy is when you know how."

As I PREPARE for my twenty-first season as Director of Brewster Day Camp, I would add a corollary to her statement: "Ready is when you begin." From my experience, I rarely ever feel really ready for anything that is about to start! Did I feel ready to go to Kindergarten? I'm not sure - it was a while ago! Did I feel ready to go to overnight camp? Absolutely not - yet I went anyway! Did I feel ready to become a mother? No way - and I became one, nonetheless! Did I feel ready to parent teenagers? Not on your life - yet, I did! My point is this: We can PREPARE as much as possible, yet at the end of the day, it's simply starting, that is most important!

Join me in welcoming with joy, the month of May so that we can get this camp going with...
