BREWSTER DAY CAMP Newsletter November 1, 2016 Vol. 36 Issue 2

 Hello Brewster Day Camp! Happy November! TRANSITIONS are all around us this month. Here are just a few: On November 6th we move the clocks back one hour to leave Daylight Savings Time . Two days later, it's Election Day and we will choose a new leader for our country for the next four years. This month, all of the leaves will finish turning colors and fall off the trees.TRANSITIONS are a natural part of everyday life. When you live close to nature as a matter of habit, you notice all sorts of natural TRANSITIONS like the repeating cycles of the ocean tides - high tide to low tide and back again. The ocean beaches look different with their Winter and Summer berms - moving the sand naturally season to season. The phases of the moon cycle monthly and the orbits of the planets TRANSITION constantly!
The earth is such a good teacher. When I notice all of the natural changes and cycles in nature, I find more peace with the whole idea of TRANSITION. Some fear change, though I think the more curious we become about the constant change around us, the less foreboding the idea of TRANSITION becomes. Like the BDC campers pictured below observing what is left behind in the sand when the tide goes out, bringing curiosity to the study of TRANSITION makes the concept all that much easier.
Sometimes change can be difficult, yet with practice comes ease. At camp we TRANSITION to a new activity every 45 minutes, all day long. Each summer, campers TRANSITION to a new tent group, and every three years, BDC campers TRANSITION to a new Hill. At camp, children and adults practice TRANSITIONS constantly. When we move through a TRANSITION with grace, we are exercising our flexibility muscles and the more we do this, the better at it we become. As my son's great grandmother used to say, "easy is when you know how!"
A life well lived embraces TRANSITION and change. This month, with all of the transitions about us, join me in noticing, accepting, and honoring TRANSITION. The more we celebrate change, the easier it is to live a life of peace and fulfillment.
