Sometimes GRIT and determination are needed to learn the coordination of the sidestroke. Thanks to many wonderful BDC Swim Instructors, this work is satisfying and joyful in our environmentally friendly saline pool!
|
"Grit is knowing who you are and where you are headed, moving determinedly forward with eyes fixed on the mark, rather than the obstacles that lie in wait."
|
Sharing true GRIT, these older campers lead their team to BDC Olympic Day victory last summer! "Grit is having the courage to push through, no matter what the obstacles are, because it's worth it." - Chris Morris

When a group of pre-teen boys play happily together outside in the summer, truly the only word that comes to mind is...GRIT!

Finally, a book which shares what we at camp already know! This is a wonderful New York Times best-selling book about the power of GRIT in children's lives. Paul Tough writes a compelling argument for how we can help kids embrace GRIT as a means to achieving life long success - a must read this summer!

Hello BDC Family and Friends, grit...GRIT...GRIT...This winter has certainly tested my GRIT quotient! For anyone living north of Cuba, this winter has been exceptionally long with record breaking cold. Let's face it: There's no use complaining about the weather. It is what it is. There is something, however, to be learned from living with these conditions.
This winter, I have learned how important it is for me to focus on my goals - both long and short term. I, like many of you, have spent countless hours shoveling snow, chipping ice, and spreading salt on the pathways around my house, all the while, reminding myself that summer will come...first, Spring and then Summer! This month, more light arrives each day as the earth tips closer to the sun. We can look forward to warmer days and hopefully some melting of the mounds of snow which are everywhere here in New England. I am committed to creating the best camp ever and, in the midst of this incredible winter, I am embracing my true GRIT!
So what's GRIT?! Angela Duckworth, the University of Pennsylvania researcher, aptly describes GRIT as, "passion and perseverance for long-term goals." Author Paul Tough, (who I heard speak at a national camp conference a few years ago) discusses the power of GRIT in his New York Times bestselling book, "How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character." He believes that character, confidence, curiosity and true GRIT are more important to your child's success than academic results. Camp (and sometimes a brutal winter) is the perfect place for us all to strengthen our GRIT muscles!
While sending piles of GRIT to you and yours, I am also wishing you plenty of...
CHGS+P!
Milisa 'misa' Galazzi, Director
Brewster Day Camp
PS. Regardless of the many snow days this winter, BDC is still opening on Monday, June 22. Camp will undoubtedly be a little smaller during Week #1. Rest assured, your family will experience the best of BDC if you attend camp that week! For more Dates & Rates go here.
PPS. If you were a camper at BDC last summer, watch your snail mail...you will soon receive a personal, handwritten, postcard from your counselors. Enjoy!

"Heroes are never perfect, but they're brave, they're authentic, they're courageous, determined, discreet, and they've got grit" said Wade Davis. Many of our BDC staff (past and present) possess this kind of heroic GRIT!
|
"Grit is having the courage to do the right thing, regardless of the popularity or consequences."
|
When you get to look like your hero, you feel like your GRIT quotient increases exponentially!
|
It's really a simple equation: (Summer + water) x (friends + joy) = GRIT
|
At BDC campers are encouraged to participate in all sorts of activities like this special fishing expedition. All BDC activities are designed to help campers push themselves out of their comfort zone and embrace their true GRIT!
