Like a FAMILY, everyone at camp is learning and growing at their own rate and in their own way. At BDC it is often hard to tell how old someone is and that's because Counselors (left) and Camper Leaders (right) work together, side by side making that special camp magical happen for all! |
BDC FAMILY GATHERINGS
Like many FAMILIES, BDC has traditions for gathering and for saying good bye. These camp FAMILY rituals tie us to one another and reassure us through the shared experience of repetition.
BDC COMPASS ROSE I call the wind from the North, Its cold carries the courage for hard work. I call the sun from the East, Its rays of light bring hope for each new day. I call the heat from the South, Its warmth carries good spirit to share with others. I call the dark from the West, Its quiet brings peace to the end of the day. PUEBLO PRAYER Hold on to what is good, even if it is a handful of earth. Hold on to what you believe, even if it is a tree that stands by itself. Hold on to what you must do, even if it is a long way from here. Hold on to Life, even if it is easier letting go. Hold on to my hand, even when I have gone away from you. NAVAJO PROVERB Walk tall as the trees; Live strong as the mountains; Keep the warmth of summer in your heart; And the Great Spirit will always be with you.

BDC 2014 STAFF
Most camp directors are thrilled to welcome back half of their previous season's staff. Each summer at BDC, we typically have between 80%-95% staff return rate! (Who wouldn't want to come home to to Cape Cod for the summer and rejoin their camp FAMILY!?) As of this publication, the following lists the staff from last summer who are 100% committed to returning to BDC'14. We are still in conversation with a few more folks from last summer who are working out the details of their return. (Hint hint!) Next month, we will announce our Hill Heads and Program Staff! Hello BDC Family and Friends,
Institution. Organization. Corporation. Many businesses pride themselves on these words. As BDC enters its thirty-third season, and I begin my eighteenth year as camp director, what we really are is a FAMILY!
Here's my definition of FAMILY:
"A group of loving people, committed to the hard work of clear communication, who support each other - with joy - through times of triumph as well as times of challenge."
I witnessed the beauty of the BDC FAMILY in action over the past few weeks. As we said our final good bye to a precious member of our camp FAMILY last week (read more here), we were powerfully connected to one another near and far. Camp folks texted, emailed, and video chatted with each other from all over the world. They sent letters from as far away as Spain. They traveled to New England by car and plane from California, Georgia, Washington DC, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio. Those who could not physically come, met at airports to give hugs and pass off hand-written notes and cards like the Pony Express of days gone by.
During this cold winter month, the camp FAMILY sprang into action in support of each other. Through these gestures, I witnessed the true power of FAMILY. We came together in any way that we could because we all know what comfort lies in belonging to something larger than ourselves. Each camp season at BDC, we have the ability to re-learn this important life lesson and grow our FAMILY. The camp FAMILY creates a safe and accepting place where people of all ages connect and support one another with love and joy. Simply put, 'camp' is a massive FAMILY reunion each summer!
Please join the BDC FAMILY in whatever way feels comfortable this season. I am waiting for you at the Welcome Walk ready with a hug, a handshake, or a high five!
Until then, I'm sending you and your loved ones heaps of...
CHGS+P,
Milisa 'misa' Galazzi, Director
Brewster Day Camp
PS. Strong FAMILIES have powerful traditions which help weave together the fabric of our lives. This eWAVES highlights some of these traditions. To read more about what others have to say about the BDC FAMILY click here.

Each year, my FAMILY sends out a "holiday card." Some years it's an April Fools Day card, other years it's a Cinco de Mayo greeting - no two years are the same! This year it's "Peace and Love!" My husband, David, (seated upper left) works at camp in many capacities - and this year will be leading some exciting new fishing excursions. Our sons, pictured above (Dan left and Max right) grew up at BDC from infancy. This summer, Dan is old enough to work at BDC. Please join me in welcoming him - as well as ALL of the other former BDC campers who come back each season to work joyously in the embrace of the BDC FAMILY!

Recently, we received the following electronic message along with the above photo: "We are having a BDC sleepover tonight. Wish you were here! Hope you are having a great holiday. Regards to your mom. Love from: Laura, Sam, Elisabeth, Nicole, Nola, and Carrie" This is the camp FAMILY in action on a winter vacation evening! How do you stay connected to the BDC FAMILY in the off season? Let us know....you might make it into the eWAVES!
