Everyone feels more grounded when the CYCLES of life are predictable. At BDC, we share many traditions where older and younger campers spend time together helping each other remember where we have grown from and where we are headed.

Welcome to BDC's New Year! Our camp CYCLE begins this month...

"Whatever you can do or dream you can,
begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!"

 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Throughout all of the seasons, the BDC compass rose guides us as we CYCLE through the changes the year brings. Its cyclical nature keeps us balanced and reminds us that courage, hope, good spirit and peace guide us all year long.
BDC staff experience their own CYCLES of the year as well. Whether it's transitioning back into college life or adjusting to a private school teaching environment, we all leave our summer lives behind as the CYCLE continues.
Hello BDC Family and Friends,

In the camp world, the month of October is actually the beginning BDC's New Year! (We could have named this email The New Year Edition, though we thought that might be confusing.) Those of us imbedded in the Youth Leadership Development profession - aka: the Camping Industry, know that October signifies the start: we roll over our databases, we move our paper files from the 'current campers' file drawer to the 'previous campers' drawer, we open new computer files with 2014 as the date...and so on!

As I enter my eighteenth year-round season as BDC's Camp Director, I am struck by the power of the CYCLICAL nature of my work. Camp, like schools, are ever able to reinvent themselves as well as care for and maintain traditions which stabilize us all. Predictable CYCLES are comforting...cycles are grounding....cycles let us know where we stand compared to ourselves at this time last year, or ten years ago. Noticing CYCLICAL rhythms in our life is a way for us to remain steady in an ever changing landscape of time moving forward.

October is the month that BDC re-boots and begins anew...and we are ready! What CYCLES are you aware of in your life which comfort and ground you?

As fall descends on New England and once again the golden leaves begin to drop from the oaks, I am, as always, wishing you...

~ Martha Beck

The beads that campers wear around their necks at BDC signify another reassuring CYCLE at camp. As campers move from activity to activity, they earn a different color bead for participation. In this way, campers can actually see the daily CYCLE of their time at camp.

One of the first things that BDC campers in our Sailing School learn, is the predictability of how one's boat moves around the wind. The Sailing Circle makes wind direction and your particular boat's relationship to it, a very reassuring CYCLE when moving in a 420 on Cliff Pond.
Friendships work in CYCLES too. Memories made with summer friends stay with you through the cycles of the year while you make new memories with school friends.
