This past Thursday our WOW Head, Martine Knights, led a favorite Admirals Hill choice activity - the egg drop! This camper protected his egg with leaves and blades of grass found around campus and he then dropped it from the third floor of the Salt Box School deck. Campers look forward to this activity every summer and SAVOR the excitement of testing their homemade contraptions!
|
Our rising 5th and 6th grade girls group, the Baybirds, were inspired to initiate and manage BDC's very own compost system. Join me in applauding their efforts to SAVOR the natural elements of our wonderful planet and to continue to teach others about taking care of our earth!

Jumping into water is one of the best ways to cool off and SAVOR the joy of hot summer days. At BDC, campers have the opportunity to splash around in many kinds of water including our environmentally friendly saline pool at least once a day and Flax Pond or Cliff Pond down at the Waterfront in Nickerson State Park. We also have trips to boogie board at Coast Guard Beach, swim at Crystal Lake, and enjoy the sand and waves at Crosby Beach. WATER is everywhere on Cape Cod and we SAVOR all of it!
|
Friendships are the most important things to SAVOR, especially those made in the summer! Give a friend a hug the next time you see him/her and SAVOR his/her presence in your life. What could be better than letting a friend know that you really appreciate them!
|
"Taking pictures is savoring life intensely, every hundredth of a second."
|
At our Waterfront in Nickerson State Park, some camper groups honed their canoeing skills while playing an exciting game of canoe tug-o-war. When's the last time you went canoeing or kayaking? It's a stupendous way to SAVOR the summer weather, the outdoors, and a fun activity! Go find some friends, some boats, and SAVOR some time outside.
|
ANIMAL FIND of the WEEK: This egg shell was found amongst the mulch and tree roots after being left by an unknown animal. Can you help identify what kind of animal emerged from this egg? Keep your eyes peeled for other critters as we spend more time SAVORING the outdoors throughout the summer!

BDC PARKING LOT REMINDERS
Thank you in advance for keeping our busy parking lot safe for children and families.
- If your child is old enough to use the Hello and Go in the mornings, we encourage you to do so for easy drop offs between 8-8:45am!
*****CHURCH PARKING LOT CLOSED IN THE MORNINGS THIS WEEK #5 ONLY! You are always welcome to park in the church lot next door to camp during AM drop off (except this week) and PM pick up and use the BDC path near the Art Tent for easy access to the our campus. Always park at the church in the afternoon if you are planning a slower pickup or remaining for Family Swim.
- Please drive slowly! Even when the parking lot is empty.
- Always follow the directions of the BDC Parking Attendants wearing orange vests.
- Put away your cell phone so that your full attention is on driving and parking. We are a cell phone limited campus.
- Use the white shelled Safe Path (through the trees) to stay away from cars near the BDC Office if you have parked in the lower parking lot near our Exit.
- Turn off your car when you go to get your campers - even if it is hot. The fumes from the exhaust are unhealthy for those nearby.
- While in the parking lot, children should remain with you at all times.
- We are a smoke free campus. Please refrain from smoking in your car while in our lot.
THANK YOU!

Hello BDC Family and Friends, We have officially arrived at the mid-summer point and camp is only getting better! As it always seems to happen, the sweet summer days are swiftly floating away one by one. While it is certainly easy to get caught up in the busyness of family and vacation plans, we are reminding you to SAVOR SUMMER!
Jump in the ocean, collect sea shells, lie in a hammock, and most importantly...SAVOR the time spent with family and friends as well as those people you only see in the summer. These precious eight weeks of camp are some of the swiftest, fun-filled times of the year - be sure to enjoy every last drop!
Whether you are SAVORING the summer with us at Brewster Day Camp or enjoying the (very) warm weather elsewhere, I am sending you....
CHGsP!
Milisa 'misa' Galazzi, DirectorBrewster Day Camp
CHURCH PARKING LOT CLOSED IN THE MORNINGS THIS WEEK ONLY! Please use the Hello and Go for quick drops offs in the morning if your child(ren) are able to do so. As always, please continue to use the church lot in the afternoons for slower pickups or for parking if you are attending our BDC Family Swims daily from 5-6:30. Thanks!

"The passing moment is all that we can be sure of; it is only common sense to extract its utmost value from it."
|
Camp is a special place for both campers AND staff members. Summer is a unique time to SAVOR days spent with people of all ages. You'd be surprised how much we can learn from each other in just eight short weeks!

BDC NIGHT AT THE WHITE CAPS

You may even see a familiar face throwing out the first pitch! There will also be a special BDC raffle during the game. Come this Monday to support BDC and our local Cape Cod League Baseball team. This is a win-win for everyone!

This past Thursday evening BDC hosted our Mid-Summer Family Potluck and Camper/Counselor Talent show. This camper, with his happy Tent Counselors, is SAVORING a cold, refreshing treat from the ice cream truck that stopped by to provide tasty treats for BDC families and friends - half the proceeds from the sale of ice cream that evening went to support BDC camper-ships. THANK YOU to everyone who brought food and fun to this wonderful evening!
|
HOT WEATHER REMINDERS:Bring a water bottle to camp and use it! (See the camp store for a BDC water bottle in various colors!)
Drink LOTS of water...before, during, and after camp! Water stations are all over campus. Stay on top of hydrating yourself BEFORE you become thirsty.
Watch for signs of heat effects: Red faces, lethargy/exhaustion, and lack of sweat are signs of overheating. If any of these signs are present, STOP what you are doing, drink water, get your head or whole body wet, and move to someplace cool.
Stay in the shade. We have lots of trees and sun tents on campus - enjoy staying out of the sun on hot days!

|
There is no better feeling than to SAVOR the cooling sensation that ocean water brings on hot summer days. What are doing to stay cool where you are?
|
At BDC, many of our staff members were once campers and have spent many summers at 3570 Main St. For example, Talia Richkin (left) and Charlie Weber (right), once campers together and then Camper Leaders, are now BDC Tent Counselors. Together they share nearly two decades of camp years between them!
At Friday Morning Assembly this past week, our Camper Leaders introduced themselves and told the camp family how many summers they have been at BDC. Together, the CL's have spent 63 BDC summers - and those Camper Leaders are only 14-16 years old!
SAVORING every summer together is a special part of our BDC culture. When we say, "BDC is like a family," we really mean it!
|
This group of Sailors Hill campers and Camper Leaders are truly SAVORING the sunshine on their trip to Breakwater Beach. A big thank you to this LEAP choice activity for cleaning up the beach and making Brewster better for all of us!

NEW TO BDC? Here Are General BDC Reminders
- Not sure what the Camper Expectations are at BDC? Go here to read BDC '13 Campers' Guide.
- Remember to pack a HUGE lunch with lots of healthy snacks. Campers burn nearly twice the amount of calories while playing at camp than they do sitting at a desk in school.
*SMARTLUNCHES: If you wish to purchase a pre-made lunch for your camper, please do it one week in advance by going to the SmartLunches website here.
- Get lots of sleep. Most campers need more sleep in the summer because they are so much more active. Some studies show that children's bones grow more in the summer months than in the winter due to all of the vitamin D from healthy exposure to the sun. Growth spurts AND an active life style add up to kids needs MORE sleep in the summer!
- Check for ticks! Check your body thoroughly every day - especially in the creases (arm pits, back of the knees) and your head. Our nurses are available to answer your tick-related questions!
- Prepare for all types of weather! If the weather is iffy, please send a rain coat! Even as we move to dry locations, ALL of our campers are encouraged to have the appropriate clothing: Admirals Hill campers (grade 5-8) should bring warm clothes, long pants, and socks - sometimes, you might go ice skating or bowling on a rainy day! Everyone should bring a rain coat on cloudy days!
|
Sometimes we must remind ourselves to SAVOR just sitting and talking with a friend - young OR old. On these hot summer days, it's important to rest and rehydrate often before jumping back into your busy summer lives! Take a moment to SAVOR just being together with someone you treasure.
