The current Ironton Ferry has been in service since 1927, carrying people, bicycles, and cars across the narrows on the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix. This service saves residents of Hemingway Point almost 40 miles of driving on a round trip to Charlevoix. On October 2nd, a vehicle on the ferry suddenly caught fire, causing major damage to the ferry, mostly involving the steel deck plating and the pilothouse.

Following the bidding process, Irish Boat Shop was selected by Charlevoix County to make the repairs along with some improvements to the vessel. After more than a month of work replacing, reinforcing, and welding the deck plates, all of the completed repairs have passed US Coast Guard inspections. Included in the improvements was replacing the original access hatches in the deck which were only 14 inches in diameter; people are a lot bigger now than they were in 1927! The new access hatches are 24 inches in diameter and much more functional.

With the major structural work complete, the only tasks that remain are some repairs to the pilothouse, painting, and towing the Ferry back to Ironton in time for summer.
