It has always been our pleasure to support sailing in Northern Michigan and preserve the history behind our great sport. One great opportunity for us has been helping to maintain the fleet of the 17-square-meter boats unique to Walloon Lake. These beautiful sloops are a staple of summertime for the residents around the lake and beyond. Since the first 17 was built in 1934, these 24-foot sailboats have been racing on Walloon Lake, with growing popularity in recent years. 9 17s were on the starting line for the Commodore’s Cup in 2015.

Currently, we are working on several of the 17s, getting them ready to take the title in 2016. We have two big projects involving the recoring of one of the 17s' decks, and completely replacing the deck on another. Meanwhile, our riggers are hard at work improving the rigging on a few of the boats. There will be more to come when the jobs have been completed.

If anyone is looking for a serious sailing adventure, try earning the Jules Verne Trophy! Two crews recently finished their attempt to set the record for the fastest continuous circumnavigation by sailboat. The two trimarans "Spindrift 2", at 40m (131ft), and "IDEC SPORT", at 31.5m (103ft) have held the record previously under different names.

Both boats were ahead of the record pace for much of the race, but poor wind in the South Atlantic on the home stretch ruined their chances. The racers continually focused on hitting the perfect weather to get the best speed throughout their more than 45-day voyage. In the end, both trimarans missed the record by just under 2 days. Who will make the next attempt?

The Laser Standard Mark II Sail is a big upgrade from the standard Laser Sail and has now been approved as class legal for competition! This sail features a bi-radial design and is constructed from 4.5oz Dacron and optimized patching for superior durability. Other improvements include a much larger window for improved vision, Velcro batten pockets, and a patch to protect the luff tube from the mast joint.
