The 47th Annual Red Fox Regatta is taking place this upcoming weekend on beautiful Lake Charlevoix. The Labor Day Weekend Regatta is hosted each year by the Charlevoix Yacht Club and is the last large regatta in Northern Michigan for the season. More than 50 boats are currently registered for the weekend of racing! On Saturday, the fleet starts in Charlevoix, racing south to Boyne City over the course of the day. Saturday Night is the big party in Boyne City on the waterfront. The party is open to anyone with a ticket, purchasable through the Charlevoix Yacht Club. On Sunday, the boats head north, racing back to Charlevoix.

For the brave sailors, Boyne City is also hosting the Last Chance Regatta the last weekend in September. The real diehards will stick around for the J/22 Cranberry Cup in Charlevoix on November 29th!

Henry Barkhausen, who turned 100 this past winter, has been sailing the Great Lakes his entire life and is a marvel of good health along with his wife of more than 70 years, Alice. To celebrate, the Barkhausen family spent a beautiful afternoon sailing and motoring their fleet of 6 boats, all of which Henry built himself! In the evening, they hosted a party with our crew to celebrate the occasion.

This past winter, Henry finished building his most recent boat "Final Effort". In addition to these boats, Henry frequented the Great Lakes on his 1968 custom-built 38-foot wooden schooner "Champion", which he sailed until 2007. The boat was donated to the Maritime Heritage Alliance in Traverse City and is sailed by at-risk youth to help teach them important life skills. Henry could be seen high atop the mast of his boats well into his 90s, claiming it was "too dangerous for anyone else to go up there!"
