Larry and Amy Ketten have finished their project of 20 years: building Morello, a 40' Trimaran, from the ground up. The project began in 1995 when Larry and Amy decided to sell the boat that they had previously restored to pay for the initial wood glue, fiberglass, and the plans for the vessel. Tony Grainger was the designer of the boat. The boat is designed for high-performance sailing and to be easily doublehanded. The project progressed as time and money allowed. As you can expect, the project was much larger in scope than originally anticipated. Larry began sailing around the age of 10 after being inspired by the story of Robin Lee Graham's solo circumnavigation as a teenager in National Geographic. His first boat was a leaky Sailfish that needed frequent draining. After sailing a windsurfer for many years, he realized that he really liked going fast and chose to build a multihull to maximize speed. Larry is not your average craftsman, he has worked as a professional boat builder for 35 years. Amy has been helping the entire time with much of the construction and decided on the name "Morello" for the boat. The boat is composed primarily of cedar strips sandwiched between layers of fiberglass with carbon fiber structural beams and supports. The 60-foot carbon mast holds a 780-square-foot mainsail with a 365-square-foot headsail, while the total vessel only weighs 7,500 pounds. Morello is 40 feet long with a beam of 32 feet and drawing 8.5 feet with the daggerboard down. At the end of July, the adventure will begin, as Larry and Amy will set sail for the St. Lawrence Seaway and eventually on to the Caribbean, where they can live on the boat year-round. From there, the possibilities are endless! |
