Our featured sailor this newsletter is Terence Taylor Jr. Terence has had a strong showing in his early career, and is doing very well in racing! Terence follows the old rule of improving every race, with a few top 5 finishes already under his belt. The McLaughlin Team chatted with Terence about his success and future goals in sailing.
What got you into sailing?
It's been a sport through out my entire family as long as I can remember.
What event/place is your favorite to sail in? I enjoy sailing in Rochester, Skaneateles, Willow Bank, and I'm moving to Florida so sailing at Clearwater should be a good experience for me.
What are your favorite conditions to sail in? I enjoy sailing in heavy wind. It is awesome!
Why do you love your McLaughlin? What make it different from other boats? I love my McLaughlin because it's awesome! It's different from other optis because it was tuned just for my weight and it's just a really tight boat. McLaughlins are awesome!
Do you have any advice for other sailors just starting out? Don't panic, just think about you and the course.
What are your sailing goals? What's next? I hope on someday being a Pro sailor and I have really good sailors at IYC so I think I have a good future! |

Bermuda
An Amazing Place
This past July, McLaughlin supplied over 180 Optimists and 12 RIBs for the North American Championships in Hamilton, Bermuda. Given the amount of work needed to set up and break everything down, Steve, Garrett, and I were there for almost a month. It was both a massive undertaking for us and an adventure on a tropical island. Below are just a few highlights of what I will remember as "the summer I lived in Bermuda."
We arrived in Bermuda about a week before the competitors would show up. It was a long week of labor to get set up. We stayed on a 42 foot fishing boat parked at the club, which turned out to be perfect. All the boats...... for more of Spencers article, click here

We are going to do a simple brumel splice, so what you will need is:
1) A splicing Fid http://optistuff.com/store/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&search_in_description=1&keyword=1366
2) A length of single braid line (dyneema or vectran)
3) A felt tip marker
 | by: Pete Gregory |
Step #1- Start with your piece of line and measure out one (1) full fid length and make a mark with your felt tip marker. Insert the tip of the fid through the middle of the line where you made your mark, then put the end of the tail in the end of the fid and feed them both through the hole you have created with the fid to your desired loop sizeFor more on Pete's Article click here

SailCube
Introducing the SailCube.
The coolest new thing to learn sailing on!

The SailCube is a safe, fun, inexpensive way to get your Learn to Sail program up and running, or phase out some of your older Optis that are too banged up to continue. Why continue to waste time and money fixing up your old Optis for your Green fleet, only to have them be banged up again? With SailCube, your maintenance issues are gone in the breeze.

Built in Drag Strips allow you to pull the boat right up on the beach with no damage.
Auto-bailing allows you to have tipping practice, and not spend the rest of the day bailing out the boats.
A new rigging plan with an adjustable mast step duplicates the Opti, so you can use you old rigs with no retrofitting. Lightweight construction brings the SailCube in at just 10 pounds more than an Opti.

You're just full of Hot Air!
An article on Airbags
 | by: Brian Holloway | Every summer, we go through a ton of airbags here at the shop. Why do we send out so many? I believe it is because many sailors don't understand the problems inherent in Optimist airbags, and how to care for them. Following are some helpful tips for keeping your airbags in shape and in your boat! What makes airbags pop? 1. Inflation. Inflation is an issue your sailor should be constantly aware of. It's their responsibility to......
