Searcy: Over $120 million in investments made in the Coastal Gateway region in 2012

$120 Million project locates in the Coastal Gateway Region! 400 jobs produced! A headline such as this would produce euphoria throughout our 5 counties. The momentum created would carry us forward in our efforts to create opportunity and improve the quality of life throughout this region.
In 2012, there were over 400 jobs created throughout our region and companies invested over $120 million in new construction, new equipment and other capital expenditures. Those jobs created payrolls that were spent in our communities. Furthermore, much of that $120 million multiplied through our local economies. While companies such as GEC Organics in Castleberry and International Biomass Energy (IBE) in Jackson were new additions to our industrial community, the majority of jobs were created by our existing companies such as Conecuh Sausage, Guyoung Tech, and Gate Precast.
When a company expands, it does not usually capture the imagination and the enthusiasm that a "new" company does. This phenomenon is not new in economic development. However, we should be excited about the expansion of existing industry for a number of reasons. The amount communities invest in infrastructure and incentives, when pursuing new companies, is usually far greater than the resources necessary for a company to expand their current operations. Also, an existing company is deepening its roots and ties to a community when they elect to expand. This validates the community as a place to do business and ultimately makes an area more attractive to companies searching for a location to site another plant.
Supporting existing business and the attraction of new business are equally important to the overall economic well being of a region. One may be more "glamorous", but supporting our local industries offers an un-paralleled return on our investment.
Your Coastal Gateway Regional Economic Development Alliance remains committed to supporting our existing businesses and encouraging the continued investment in both facilities and employees. In 2013, CGEDA held an Existing Business Appreciation Summit that was well attended. The summit demonstrated the commitment of industries throughout the region to continue their efforts to seek out opportunities and succeed in today's economy. Our existing business program will continue in 2013. The information that we have gathered, in meetings with industries in the region, has provided insights into what they need to be successful. Additionally, it has also helped to identify areas where slight improvements will make positive impacts as we work to enhance our business climate.
Remember as we move forward in 2013, our success is dependent on working together as a region and building our regional economy on the sound foundation established by the companies that have already made their commitment to the future. |

Since 2007, the company has increased its employee base by more than 70%, currently employing more than 260 people. Smith says state to use $9 million on Hwy. 84
BY MIKE QUALLS
Managing Editor, The Monroe Journal
Citizens in Monroe and Conecuh counties may actually see some physical work started soon to widen a 25-mile section of U.S. Highway 84 from Monroeville to Interstate 65.
According to Sandy Smith of Monroeville, the state still has $9 million of the $10 million that was earmarked for the project.
Smith is the executive director of the Monroeville/Monroe County Chamber of Commerce and one of the local leaders in the push to four-lane Hwy. 84 across the state as part of the five-state El Camino East-West Corridor.
In her report to Coastal Gateway Regional Economic Development Alliance's board last Thursday in Monroeville, Smith said $9 million isn't a lot considering the entire Monroeville to I-65 project is estimated to cost $107 million.
She said that since 2005, Alabama's Congressional Delegation consisting of Senators Richard Shelby and Jeff Sessions and Rep. Jo Bonner have helped get a total of $11.450 million for the project.
An engineering study has been completed and was submitted for public opinion a couple of years ago.
"In 2005 Gov. Bob Riley stood on the courthouse steps and made a commitment that the section from Monroeville to I-65 would be completed," said Smith. "Congressman Bonner has been a key player for us and he says it's time for the state to go forward with the project."
Smith said the annual visit by city and county officials to Washington to meet with the state's Congressional Delegation is coming up and she encouraged everyone who could attend to do so to show support for the project.
Smith said she recently attended the Alabama Department of Transportation's (ALDOT) meeting for the state's 10-year plan at ALDOT's division office in Grove Hill.
"They discussed ALDOT's 10-year plan and it looks dismal for any projects in Monroe County," she said. "They listed 11 projects that would require $600 million to complete them all and only $22 million has been allocated. One of the major projects on the list is a new bridge over the Mobile River. It will happen because Airbus is coming to Mobile and the state will probably borrow money to finish it."
Smith said she believes it would be good for Monroe County to marry the Hwy. 84 project to the Mobile River bridge project.
"Both projects are in south Alabama and in the same congressional district (District 1), and marrying our project to theirs would create a larger bargaining group," she said.
Smith said the Hwy. 84/ El Camino supporters should also consider engaging the help of large industries, such as Georgia Pacific and others, which have production facilities along Hwy. 84 in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas.
Smith added that Mississippi has completed its project to four-lane Hwy. 84 through the state.
"We have sat and watched Mississippi finish its project while ours has not went anywhere," she said. "I believe the timing is right to get this done."
Smith said John Cooper, ALDOT's executive director, has said the remaining $9 million will be used on Hwy. 84 and has asked the group to specify how they'd like to see it used.
"My thinking is that we should ask that it be used to start at I-65 and work back toward Monroeville," said Smith.
Jim Searcy, executive director of Coastal Gateway, said, transportation and infrastructure are critical because economic development usually locates near large transportation arteries. A good example is Hwy. 43 that's four-laned through Mobile and Clarke counties."

Conecuh County reservoir pending Corps' decision
BY MIKE QUALLS
Managing Editor, The Monroe Journal
A group organized to create a 2,700-acre public reservoir in Conecuh County is optimistic that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will approve the second phase.
In a report to Coastal Gateway Regional Economic Development Alliance's board last Thursday in Monroeville, Repton's Mayor Terri Carter said if the Corps approves the second phase, the lake could become a reality is as little as five years.
Carter, who is a member of the reservoir committee, said the plan is to construct a dam on Murder Creek to create the manmade reservoir, which would provide irrigation to landowners within five miles of the reservoir.
"From what I've been told it would create opportunities in growing food crops," said Carter.
Carter said the proposed location for the reservoir, which will have 62 miles of shoreline, would put it about 12 miles from downtown Repton just north of Highway 20. She said the reservoir would be a mile wide at its widest point.
She added that in recent years two other plans to create reservoirs in the state also reached the second phase, but were not approved to continue to the third phase by the Corps.
"We've got our fingers crossed and we're asking everyone to pray it's approved," said Carter.
Qualls, Mike. "Conecuh County reservoir pending Corps' decision". The Monroe Journal (Monroeville) 24 January 2013. |
