Protect your Access to Compounded Medications |
The Senate will soon vote S.959 that would unduly restrict access to custom compounded medications. We support actions to improve safety and protect patients everywhere. However, S.959 has unintended consequences that will deny access to important medications prepared by reputable professional compounding pharmacies such as ours. Please contact your Senators and Representatives today and SPEAK OUT TO OPPOSE BILL S.959.

Oxytocin - Improvement of Social Interactions and Sexual Function
The understanding of the function of oxytocin has expanded dramatically over the years from a simple peptide used to induce uterine contractions and milk ejection to a complex neuromodulator with the capacity to shape human social behavior. Decades of research have outlined oxytocin's ability to enhance intricate social activities ranging from pair bonding, sexual activity, affiliative preferences, and parental behaviors.1 Oxytocin induces a general sense of well-being including calm, improved social interactions, increased trust, and reduced fear as well as endocrine and physiological changes. Oxytocin release is augmented by touch and physiological support. Therefore, oxytocin is of potential use in enhancing interpersonal and individual well-being, and might have more applications in neuropsychiatric disorders especially those characterized by persistent fear, repetitive behavior, reduced trust and avoidance of social interactions.2
One double-blind, placebo-controlled study showed that intranasally administered oxytocin leads to a marked increase in oxytocin levels in the blood with increased secretion of epinephrine when subjects were engaged in sexual activity in a laboratory setting.3 MacDonald and Feifel of the University of California, San Diego Medical Center Department of Psychiatry, published a case report on a male treated with a course of intranasal oxytocin treatment for social anxiety. The patient had significant, broad-spectrum improvements in sexual function, including libido, erection, and orgasm, and oxytocin was well tolerated.4 Also, another report presented the case of treatment-resistant male anorgasmia who was successfully treated with administration of intranasal oxytocin during intercourse.5
Oxytocin has central and peripheral hormonal actions. According to Ron Stoop of the Center for Psychiatric Neurosciences at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, the effect of oxytocin appears to be short-lived.6 This could be due to the fact that oxytocin itself is quickly metabolized and eliminated from the body.
The effects of oxytocin vary between men and women. Drug interactions with oxytocin are not well established, but estrogen and yohimbine increase oxytocin levels and alcohol decreases them.7 The amplified effect of estrogen may be one reason why women often tend to be more physically demonstrative than men and are generally affected more by touch. It has been suggested also that stress can restrain the production of oxytocin.8
Patients with congestive failure or decreased renal function are not good candidates for oxytocin therapy, because of its propensity to cause fluid retention. Oxytocin helps to stimulate micro-circulation, thereby potentially increasing body temperature which can make some patients feel warm.8 Oxytocin can also cause headache, an increase in blood pressure, and a decrease in heart rate. Oxytocin is destroyed in the gastrointestinal tract, so it is generally administered by injection, nasal spray, or sublingual dosage form. MD Custom Rx currently compounds both oxytocin sublingual tablets and oxytocin nasal spray, which require a prescription.

"Scream Cream" - Topical Therapy for Female Orgasmic Dysfunction
The female sexual response cycle is initiated by neurotransmitter-mediated vascular and nonvascular smooth muscle relaxation, which results in clitoral and labial engorgement. The clitoris contains two columns of erectile tissue, is composed of a clitoral glans and shaft, and has a blood supply that is similar to the penis. Aminophylline acts by inhibiting phosphodiesterase, which prevents the breakdown of c-AMP to 5-AMP and causes sinusoidal smooth muscle relaxation. Topical creams that contain aminophylline and a medication that delivers the vasocongestive agent nitric oxide have been reported to successfully stimulate erections in males and females.
