Trauma-Informed Care for Displaced Populations

As awareness of the prevalence and impact of trauma in the lives of vulnerable families grows, human service organizations are increasingly providing trauma-informed care to support resilience and recovery. Through the Healing Hearts Promoting Health project and support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, The National Center on Family Homelessness recently developed a guide focused on trauma-informed care for displaced populations. It is part of a library of toolkits for use in homeless service settings, agencies serving women Veterans and children, and organizations serving displaced populations. Each toolkit includes an organizational self-assessment for evaluating current practices and adapting services and programs to respond to the needs of people affected by trauma. Learn more.

We all need opportunities to step back, breathe, and think about how our work both challenges and enriches us. For providers who work in social services, experiences of burnout and compassion fatigue can be common, especially when interacting with people who have experienced traumatic life events. This can have a significant impact on quality of life both at work and beyond. What About You? A Workbook for Those Who Work With Others provides information about self-care to help prevent burnout and compassion fatigue.
