Be Sure to #ShopSmall this Saturday

In 2010, American Express founded Small Business Saturday to help businesses with their most pressing need - getting more customers. The day encourages people to shop at small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The single day has grown into a powerful movement, and more people are taking part than ever before.

Here's just a few reasons why we want you to shop small:

* Locally owned businesses put money back into the community. They support the Little League and Boy Scouts and the local theater.

* Locally owned business owners are your neighbors. You go to church with them. You attend the Lions, Rotary or Kiwanis with them. They are your friends.

* Locally owned businesses hire local people. They provide jobs and help keep our community vibrant.

Help grow our community into the kind of place in which we all want to live. You can do that by shopping small this Saturday, November 28th.

U of L Engineering Program Looking to Expand Relationship with Southern Indiana

The University of Louisville's (U of L) J.B. Speed School of Engineering is looking to expand their students' Co-Op opportunities by inviting Southern Indiana businesses to become involved.  This Co-Op program, accredited by ACCI (Accreditation Council for Co-Op and Internship), was founded in 1925 with the goal of developing the next generation of technical leaders.  In 2015, the program placed students into full time co-op positions in 22 states, as well as internationally with companies in Europe, Panama, and Asia.

The Engineering Career Development & Cooperative Education Director, Jim Gerstle, hopes to grow the program regionally through collaboration with Southern Indiana manufacturing and industry businesses.  "We're looking to build sustaining, long-term relationships," Gerstle said, "and these companies will benefit from a pipeline that provides skills, a cost effective workforce, and the opportunity for permanent employee(s)."

Uric Dufrene 2010

The Bureau of Economic Analysis released the Local Area Personal Income report last week, and the news was quite favorable for Clark and Floyd Counties.  The report was authored by Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at Indiana University Southeast, Dr. Uric Dufrene.  In the publication, Dr. Dufrene found both counties saw personal income gains from 2013 to 2014 that were among the highest in Indiana.

The report also states Floyd County ranked 5th among all Indiana counties in per capita personal income in 2014.  The 2014 level of $45,404 represents a 4.1% change from the previous year.  The 4.1% is up from .4% change the prior year and ranks Floyd 23rd among Indiana counties.
