Regional Cities Initiative Update

Southern Indiana Regional Cities Initiative Process Continues as State Legislators Consider Funding

The Southern Indiana Regional Cities Initiative (SIRCI) continued gathering information and ideas for a long term regional plan this week while State House Bill 1001 (the state biennial budget bill which includes funding for the Regional Cities Initiative) began moving through the Indiana House of Representatives. The budget recommended by Governor Pence allotted $84 million to the statewide project, which would have funded two regional cities for two years.   Talks are now taking place about whether to keep the amount at those levels or to reduce it.

Eric Doden, President of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation said, "The Regional Cities Initiative will enable bold transformative changes in communities across Indiana to grow and retain our best and brightest.  Unfortunately, the House budget provides an insufficient amount of state investment to pursue bold, nationally-recognized transformative change for Indiana's regional economies." Doden is encouraging those in support of the Regional Cities Initiative to click here.

"While we hope that the legislature will return the funding level to the recommended $84 million, Southern Indiana will continue the process of creating a transformative plan for the region regardless of the outcome," said Wendy Dant Chesser, President and CEO of One Southern Indiana (1si). "We have reviewed the Regional Cities Initiative study findings and agree that in order to compete with other comparatively sized cities and offer our current residents an ever rising standard of living, Southern Indiana must find a way to encourage population growth by building our region into a national brand and fostering functional collaboration across geographic and political boundaries. That will be the focus of the SIRCI plan."

Thanks to funding from the Ogle Foundation, SIRCI continued the planning process as task force members and stake holders met with BNIM and partners on Friday to gather information for a long-term regional project.   After consolidating all the information collected during the sessions, BNIM will present their findings to the SIRCI task force in March.
