FLORIDA TAKES GEORGIA
to the US SUPREME COURT
for Harming the Oyster Industry!

Florida has accused Georgia for years of
taking more than it's fair share of Chattahoochee River water, but many Georgian's believe there is a lot of evidence to prove otherwise.  So while recent court rulings have led us to believe the fight is legally over, earlier this month on November 3rd  the US Supreme Court agreed to hear Florida's argument that Georgia's "overconsumption" of Chattahoochee River water is harming Florida's oyster industry.

TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- Florida Governor Rick Scott announced Monday that the U.S. Supreme Court would take up the case of

Florida v. Georgia, a lawsuit filed over Georgia's use of fresh water from the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river basins, which has been as issue of contention for decades in Florida and Alabama.

The complaint brought by Florida alleges that Georgia's increasing use of fresh water decreased flows into the Apalachicola River and Apalachicola Bay, which in 2012 produced 90 percent of Florida's oyster harvest and 10 percent of the nation's oysters.

NOTE: it's important that we ALL remember that Georgia's withdrawal of Chattahoochee River water is offset greatly by the amount of water treated and put back into the river.  In other words, not all the water taken out of the river stays out, much of it is put back in!

DUCKS, A GREAT ENVIRONMENTAL
HEALTH INDICATOR

Every year when the leaves begin to fall, I get excited for duck & goose hunting, and the great times spent with family and friends.

There's something about hunting season that makes me very grateful for America's environmental condition and the fact that there were people that understood the dangers with DDT and other pesticides at a time when many other people had no clue.

Learning about DDT, water pollution and stormwater runoff
problems our country faces head on makes me grateful that we live in a country that not only values a strong economy but also a healthy environment.

As Theodore Roosevelt once said,
"I recognize the right and duty of this generation to use the natural resources of our land to prosper, BUT I do not recognize the right to waste them or to rob by wasteful use the generations that come after us!"

Ducks are AWESOME!  Keep your waterfowl ID skills sharp! Click on the photo to learn details and even listen to audio files for some of the most common ducks and geese in North America.

Fats, oils and greases that are poured down drains in homes and businesses can clog sewer lines and cause overflows from manholes, sending raw sewage into streams. Baby and adult wipes
are also a big problem. In fact, wipes represent a third of the debris choking sewer systems throughout the country - and about 30% of those wipes are sold as "flushable".

EPA NPDES CLEAN WATER ENFORCEMENT

USEPA FINES CANNON PLACE LLC $110,253 for dumping sediment into Lake Lanier illegally.  Bald Ridge Marina Road Onsite Mass Grading and Bald Ridge Marina Road Offsite Mass Grading (collectively, "Sites") were found to be grossly out of compliance with their respective stormwater permit requirements!

Under the Permit, developers and construction companies must design, install and maintain stormwater controls to prevent construction area runoff from polluting nearby streams and lakes. Without these controls, pollutants typically associated with construction sites, such as sediment, oil and grease, and concrete washout can enter nearby waterways.

EDITORIAL:

There are a ton of good, hard working professionals working in the construction industry here in Georgia.  Noone is asking for it to rain when in the middle of grading with all that exposed soil is running down hilland into the creek.  However, we need to remember it was a public outpouring when millions of American's demanded passage of the Clean Water Act that stresses the importance of trying hard to keep the mud out of our watersheds!  DOCUMENTATION,  APPROVED EROSION PLANS and an HONEST EFFORT TO TRY AND COMPLY to keep the mud out of our creeks, rivers, lakes and coastal areas.  Most agree, that it's a fair deal, especially when you see the damage done by irresponsible land development.

HERE's TO
TIGHT LINES & GOOD TIMES
in
 Clean Abundant Water!!!
It's important that we sacrifice a little today to give our kids an equally great place to live, swim, fish, and hunt tomorrow!  There is a lot happening with water regulations that affect a diverse community of public and private entities.
