An American Right, Clean Water!

Are we really grateful for the laws that protect our water quality?President Nixon, responding to pressure from American citizens when we didn't have clean water back in the late 60's, created most of the environmental protection laws we have today.
Let's not forget the tap water in China is undrinkable before it is boiled..... and who knows what other carcinogenic pollutants make it through to the tap (i.e.; heavy metals, pesticides, chemicals) that don't boil away!
Few of us appreciate the effectiveness of the safe drinking water act (SDWA) and clean Water Act (CWA) in our country that virtually assures us of clean tap water and the financial and criminal consequences that will occur if an individual is caught polluting our drinking water. If polluted water somehow does make it through the water system to your tap, an emergency is called and an immediate investigation and repair of the problem is the usual response. Sometimes, the drinking water plant operator will pay a fine and go to jail if they find he violated the rules that protect our water.
In China however, there's no such "right" to clean water for their citizens or visitors. For example, if your visiting China and want to drink the water, many hotel rooms have no water dispenser and are equipped with only a water heater or thermos. You can use the heater to boil water or use the water directly from the thermos. If the water in the thermos has run out, you can ask a waiter to refill it. In some cases, four- or five-star hotels may supply high-quality mineral water for free or for a minimal charge. MORE

CHICKEN OPERATIONS UNCOVERED
"POULTRY COMPANIES ARE RAVAGING THE RURAL SOUTH"
 | CAFO Chicken Houses & Uncovered Stockpile of Chicken Litter |
One chicken produces approximately 45 pounds of poop per year. A single large concentrated chicken feeding operation of 125,000 birds produces
5 MILLION, SIX HUNDRED THOUSAND POUNDS of poop every year, much of which is improperly managed. Georgia is a leading producer of chickens in the United States. The pollution to our watersheds is overwhelming and rarely fined with significant penalties for improper discharges. See recent consent decree issued by the USEPA.
The livestock industry (including poultry) has become a large contributor to our national economy in the last few decades, supplying meat, milk, eggs, and other animal products and providing meaningful employment in rural communities. At the same time however, they've become a major contributor to watershed pollution! Until recently, food animal production was integrated with crop production in a balanced way that was generally beneficial
to farmers and society as a whole. But livestock production has undergone a transformation in which a small number of very large CAFOs (confined animal feeding operations) predominate. The companies that use farmers to produce large volumes of products largely exclude themselves from liability and make the grower deal with all the waste product themselves. These CAFO companies have imposed significant - but largely unaccounted for - costs on their growers, taxpayers and communities throughout the United States. MORE

HERE's TO
TIGHT LINES & GOOD TIMES
in
Clean Abundant Water!!!
Let's respect our neighbors downstream then getting in trouble and paying fines when pollution runsoff of our properties next time it rains won't be an issue!
It's important that we sacrifice a little today to give our kids an equally great place to live, swim, fish, and hunt tomorrow! There is a lot happening with water regulations that affect a diverse community of public and private entities. If you have areas of interest that you would like included in this newsletter, please contact us at 678-469-5120.
