Please Don't Park on the Street
If you live in the unincorporated area of Fremont Township,  Highway Commissioner Bill Grinnell is asking you  "please do not park on the street".  The snow plows need to  get through.  As I send this it looks like we will get 7 to 11 inches by Sunday night into early Monday morning.  High winds will cause drifting.
Safety Measures
Emergency responders need to be able to see your address from the street. We don't often think to check this, but minutes save lives.  Look at your house tonight as if you were police or fire trying to find your home.  Please make sure your address is visible.

With the snow coming, have you thought about adopting the fire hydrant near your house?

Fremont Cert

Be prepared for an emergency. The Fremont Cert Team in conjunction with FEMA is recommending one thing each month to prepare for an emergency.

Water is an essential element to survival and a necessary item in an emergency supply kit.  During the month of February, take action to store three days worth of water for your household. " Do 1 Thing" offers the following list of ways to achieve this goal.

  •  Purchase and store a 72-hour supply of commercially bottled water;
  •  Bottle a 72-hour supply of water at home; or
  •  Learn how to provide a safe supply of drinking water for your household  in a disaster.
Traffic emails about your travel route
Did you know that you can  sign up to receive email notifications specific to your drive?  If you leave the house at 8 a.m. to drive to work, you can have PASSAGE send you emails of any traffic incidents in the 7 a.m. hour - ONLY along the route you pick. Personalize the type of alert, the time of alerts, and the location of alerts relevant to your drive.

Mundelein Earns 42nd Safest City in the USA

The Village of Mundelein recently was ranked one of America's "Top 100 Safest Cities" by Neighborhood Scout for 2015. The organization's researchers targeted cities across America with 25,000 or more people, based on the total number of crimes per 1,000 residents. Crimes include: burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, homicide, forcible rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. Data used for this research are the number of crimes reported to the FBI to have occurred in each city, and the population of each city. Neighborhood Scout obtained the research data for the analysis from the US Bureau of the Census. The Village of Mundelein ranked 42nd out of all cities across the country. Click here

Real Questions from Real People
Do you know why so many of the trees are being cut down in the Millennium trail area; north of 176, west of Fairfield and south of Bonner?

Jim Anderson from the Lake County Forest Preserve answered:

The removal of trees at Lakewood Forest Preserve is part of programmed projects. Currently, there are two projects underway at Lakewood.

One to the northwest of 176 and Fairfield is focusing on the restoration of Broberg Marsh. Historic vegetation around the marsh was scattered oak groves which have become highly overgrown with common box elder, ash and other invasive species. This effort is part of a continuing restoration effort to restore open savanna and prairie habitat on acres north of Route 176.

We are also implementing another phase of the programmed CIP (capital improvement plan) on the southeast corner of 176 and Fairfield east of the winter sports area. This restoration is focusing on the restoration of the oak woodlands surrounding Schrieber Bog area. The removals in this are consist of primarily buckthorn and honeysuckle and dying ash trees. The restoration goal for this area is to restore oak woodland communities around the bog and other wetland areas along the trail system that transverses through this area. Tallgrass Restorations is the contractor working on this portion.

Are we going to see street lights at 83 and Peterson?  It is dark at night and with construction it was a nightmare to be at that intersection after dark.

John Nelson from the Department of Transportation responded:

The roadwork along Peterson Rd including the intersection of Peterson Rd and IL 83 has had the roadwork suspended until spring.  In the spring, turn lanes, medians, traffic signals, final surface pavement, and final striping will be completed at the intersection providing clearer direction for travel.  In the meantime, I have asked our construction group to have the contractor refresh the temporary pavement markings in the intersection.

Since the intersection of IL 83 & Peterson Rd is under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), they determine if intersection lighting is warranted or not.  For this project, intersection lighting is not being installed at IL 83.  If you would like to send a message to IDOT regarding the lighting at this intersection, they have asked that questions and comments be submitted at the following website, http://www.idot.illinois.gov/about-idot/contact-us/index.

Recycle towels, sheets, blankets, eye glasses, shoes
If you have used towels, sheets or blankets that need to be recycled, please consider bringing them to Fremont Township at 22385 Rt 60, Mundelein to be donated to local Animal Shelters and Rescues.  Please drop them in the bin on the front porch. This keeps them out of the landfill and puts them to good use.

We also accept eye glasses and shoes to be recycled year round.  If you are disposing of shoes that have laces, please tie the laces together.
