Peterson Road Project Update |
The final areas of concrete and asphalt pavement to be installed for the season were completed this past week, with the exception of one driveway turn lane. The focus of some of the work last week concentrated on closing up as much of the project as possible prior to shutting down for the winter. Completion of this work will allow additional lanes to be opened on Peterson Road and on Illinois Route 83 in the next couple of weeks.
Striping on Illinois Route 83 started Monday and is expected to be complete before the end of the week. Striping on Peterson Road will begin at the end of this week and is expected to be complete by mid-December. Please be alert for the new traffic patterns. Other work scheduled for this week includes installation of erosion control blanket throughout the project as well as general site cleanup. Please note all activities are subject to weather and may be postponed.
Truck traffic on westbound Peterson Road to southbound Harris Road remains restricted. Please follow the posted detour.

What is Adaptive Signal Control Techonology? |
Adaptive Signal Control Technology (ASCT) is a newer type of technology encouraged by the Federal Highway Authority to reduce congestion and delays on area roadways. ASCT reduces delays and congestion by continually adjusting the length of traffic signals along the corridor. For more information on ASCT, please visit https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/everydaycounts/technology/adsc/
After more than 2 years of planning, design, and construction, the adaptive traffic signal system along Aptakisic Road was activated in October. Along with Lake County DOT staff, an engineer from Rhythm Engineering (developers of the InSync adaptive system) set the traffic signals along Aptakisic Road corridor from Parkway Drive to Brandywyn Lane to adaptive mode. The corridor was then monitored for proper operation of the new system.
In the coming weeks and months, a consultant hired by the contractor will be validating the operation of the system looking for improvements in congestion and intersection delay.
This is one of the first locations for this type of technology. Multiple area agencies including the Federal Highway Authority, Illinois Department of Transportation, and other counties & municipalities are monitoring the technology along this corridor for future use in their jurisdictions.
With this project in place, Lake County DOT alongside IDOT have identified Gilmer Rd from Fremont Center Road to Midlothian Rd as the next corridor to try jointly together. Plans were developed and a contract was awarded to a contractor this fall with the expected completion of the project to be in the fall of 2015.
