Message from Mundelein Police Chief Gunther
|
My phone started ringing at 2:50 am and after speaking with the police chief today and fielding many phone calls, I thought it would be good to send this out.
The Village of Mundelein's Tornado Warning Siren was set off in error early this morning around 2:45 a.m. The Village apologizes to Mundelein residents for this inconvenience. The Mundelein Police Department has reviewed the standing protocols to insure that this error does not occur again. Mundelein Police Chief Eric Guenther also extends his sincere apologies to Mundelein residents. The Village of Mundelein Alerting Siren System is primarily designed to notify our residents if there is an imminent severe weather event or an actual sighting of a tornado or funnel cloud. Our alerting system could also be activated to warn our residents of some other impending catastrophic event and would be followed by additional information conveyed via radio, television, social media etc. Every first Tuesday of each month, a test of our alerting system is done at 10:00 am. These monthly tests are part of a National testing program to help ensure the safety of our citizens during severe weather. Although last night's activation was an accident, residents are reminded to seek shelter in their basement, underground shelter or safe room. If none are available, a small windowless interior room or hallway on the lowest level of a building or home is the safest alternative. The Red Cross has a free app that will provide real time weather information and alerts based on weather information fromthe National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Visit the American Red Cross website for more information
