 OCTOBER 2015 EDITION

Stevens School Students Help Kick Off Another Great Race

Over 2,000 runners joined us on September 20th for the 22nd Annual T-Mobile Newport Liberty Half Marathon. Mark Hess, of Morristown, NJ, was the first one through the finish line with a time of 1:09:39. The first woman, Roberta Groner of Randolph, NJ, finished shortly after with a time of 1:19:29. This year, two Stevens School students gave a special performance of the National Anthem to kick off the race. Our stars, Naomi Gayner and Samantha Pethtel, both 8th graders, answered some of our questions.

Q: What was your favorite part about singing at the Half Marathon?
SP: My favorite part was the excitement leading up to the event. For me the entire experience was just amazing, and surprisingly I was looking forward to singing more than I was nervous about it.
NG: I loved how supportive the audience was. Even though Samantha and I are not professional singers, the crowd still cheered us on and even applauded when we "hit the high note" where crowds applaud professionals.

Q: Who is your favorite singer or band? Does anything else inspire you?
SP: My favorite band is Twenty One Pilots. Their creativity and unique style is something that I really admire and strive to have. This greatly influences how I write songs.
NG: I love listening to all types of music. I listen to Jessie J, Michael Jackson, Andy Grammer, Fifth Harmony and Meghan Trainor. I am inspired by musical theater and hope to have a career in musical theater.

Q: What other hobbies do you enjoy doing in your free time?
SP: I love reading and writing. Writing kind of ties into my singing and song writing. Out of the songs I have written I performed one in front of my school. I do a lot of school performances. On the side I play soccer for the JCSA.
NG: I dance. I do ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, modern and hip-hop, and I also act.

Ask a Doctor - Cold and Flu Season

Dr. Virginia Witt, MD prepares us for the colder months by helping us differentiate between a cold and the flu and avoid them both.

Q: What is the difference between a cold and the flu?
A: Both colds and flu are caused by viruses, but the flu tends to be more severe and may have more serious complications, such as pneumonia. Flu symptoms usually start with body aches, shaking chills, headache, fatigue, a high fever (over 102), and a sore throat, which may be accompanied by a deep, chesty cough. The flu usually lasts 7-10 days without treatment and can be debilitating. A cold usually has more prominent upper respiratory symptoms, like a runny nose, congestion, that may or may not come with a sore throat and a cough. Colds rarely come with a fever that is over 100.5.

Q: How are colds and the flu spread?
A: Both viruses are spread through direct contact with secretions, and nasal secretions have the highest viral concentrations. Unwashed hands are the most common way to spread your germs to someone else, or to pick up someone else's germs, because the viruses can linger for hours on surfaces such as door handles, light switches, and tabletops. Viruses can also be spread in saliva droplets when coughing or sneezing, which is why it is important to cover a cough or sneeze with your sleeve. You are usually the most contagious during the first few days of your illness.

Q: If I get a cold or the flu, what over the counter treatments are available?
A: If you think you have the flu, don't rely on over-the-counter medications. Visit your doctor within the first 24 to 48 hours of your illness to get medicine that will shorten the length of illness and lessen the symptons. Remember, there can be serious complications from the flu, especially in the very young, very old, or those who are ill, so prompt treatment is important.
If you have a cold get an antihistamine if you have a runny nose, acetaminophen or ibuprofen if you have a sore throat and body aches, a decongestant if you have stuffy head cold symptoms, dextromethorphan if you have a cough, and guaifenesin to help loosen any type of congestion. Salt water gargles have proven effective for reducing bacteria in the throat, and can be soothing. Drink lots of fluids, rest, and get some extra Vitamin C and Zinc.
