I know that you still search for me
Within the room; by the fireside Eyes alight with hope reflected In the flames, and tears you've cried.
But I am not, and cannot be Laid by your side another day, For your bonded love has set me free Letting my wounded soul fly far away.
But still I see you growing older Day by day the greyness showing In a world that's getting colder Each step you take; loneliness growing.
I also see my kindred kind Who shiver and weep upon the path Knowing not their state of mind Betrayed by the humans that they had.
Thrown by bushes and left to roam Or caged in pounds without a home These lonely dogs know nothing of The life we shared; the home; the love.
So now I need to ask of you A friendly favour, perhaps overdue. Won't you open your heart to take one in, And let the love of man and dog begin.

It's hard to believe it's the end of another year already. Holiday time is upon us once again. For so many dogs though, it will be just another day sitting in the shelter hopefully waiting for someone to spare their life. While you are out enjoying the many festivities and holiday cheer, don't forget that for DRTB the work never, ever ends. As our numbers indicate, we have been working at a record pace trying to save lots of spots. We THANK YOU SO MUCH for your dedication and support throughout 2013 and ask that you keep us in your thoughts when considering year-end donations. Don't forget about our auctions on our website running through the end of the year that will be featuring great gift giving items for your dog loving friends and at the same time helping to save another spotted life.
Wishing all of you a very joyous and safe holiday season,
Susan

"For me a house or an apartment becomes a home when you add one set of four legs, a happy tail, and that indescribable measure of love that we call a dog." -

Happy Now Fits His Name
Happy Bobby finally gets his Chance
Called Happy at the Miami shelter, this poor boy was anything but. He was covered in puncture wounds, had ear infections, & bad teeth. To make matters worse, he was an older Dalmatian. Someone even suggested he may have been used for a "bait" dog. Too horrible to even think about. Thanks yet again to our Miami heroes Linda and Dick McL. for pulling him to safety. Once in their home, he was renamed Bobby. It was obvious that he was fearful of other dogs and very easily intimidated. He seemed to be the underdog that everyone picked on. unfortunately he was, he got attacked twice by another foster dog - the second attack being pretty bad. You might remember a plea we put out begging for another place for Bobby. He had been through enough. Thankfully, a home with a female lab came through for him and he now enjoys a peaceful life and no longer has to be in fear. His new Mom, Leslie Z., has renamed him CHANCE and says, "Chance/Bobby has come a very long way in two weeks. He's gone from an untrained, frightened, and physically torn up senior to happy, following commands, and galloping through the yard. He and his (LRToF) sister get along perfectly." Plus, he gets daily belly rubs and hugs from his new family. Thanks also to new transport volunteers Karen and Joanne for helping him get to his safe, new place.

Finding (Forever) Homes for the Holidays
Some are in them while others still wait
FINALLY OUR ADOPTIONS ARE SLOWLY PICKING UP! While we still have a lot of lovable dogs needing homes, we have managed 6 adoptions this November with at least 2 more ready to happen. BUGSY, CLARISSA, DIXIE, BAMBAM, HAPPY BOBBY, & TROY have joined their new homes. However, SPANNER has been returned to try again. Additional intakes keep on coming, two were back-yard breeder dogs who came to us with support of an amazing group of folks from all sides of the dog world. The new kids are OAKLEY, LINDA, ABAGAYLE, HUNTER, & CABO.
Some sad news, seniors MASON & SIREN crossed the Rainbow Bridge, this now makes 14 senior dogs that have passed this year.
We began 2013 with 9 dogs carrying over from 2012. So far we have brought in 82 more dogs of which 3 are returnees. Our adoption count for 2013 is 63 dogs into loving homes. Responsibility for caring for 31 Dals & dogs remains the same. ANY or ALL could use SPONSORS! Your help is very much needed, especially getting these dogs noticed at events or shared on social media.
Our Dals & dogs, in various stages of readiness, seeking their forever homes are:
