A Dog's Business
by
Patricia Walter
|
That is the business
of being a dog-
to bark, to get dirty feet
to give sloppy kisses.
To always be there
at your feet, in your bed
by your side.
In the car, in the park
In your heart.
That is the business
of being a dog-
a companion
a friend
one who thinks that you
and you alone are
the center of their universe.

Hello Dal Lover!
As you'll see below, we've been working fast and furiously this past month to rescue many dogs. DRTB has two very special Guardian Angels to thank in April for helping with our saved rescues. JOYCE D. graciously responded to our plea for help with our hardship cases by making a very generous donation. She has come to our aide so many times and we love her dearly for it. We were also very surprised by a new and unknown Angel that left a wonderful gift to our spots in her will - ELLEN LOPEZ. We never knew her but hope that she will know how happy she has made many dogs with her caring. While we call special attention to these gifts, we want you all to know that each and every donation is gratefully appreciated and makes a huge difference in the life of a spotted dog.

It's sounds simple... the more foster homes we have, the more dogs we can save. In reality it's not that simple. Fostering takes time, effort, devotion, and love. It takes opening your home and heart to homeless souls that may or may not need some work. Some fosters will easily fit right in, but others who have been neglected or abused, may require more work. Even healthy, well cared for dogs may become sick due to the stress they were subjected to in the shelters. All have been abandoned and need time to feel secure again. Only a home environment can do that. Yet despite all the hard work, the rewards are SO well worth it. Just ask any foster who has successfully nursed a dog back to health to eventually see it go on to a new loving family.
We want to recognize both old new and long-term foster homes and thank them endlessly for getting involved. This is to all of you!! Frank N., Sherry M., Barb M., Linda & Dick M., Tony W., Karen H., Sandy B., Rick D., Chris D., Kathy W., Chris C., Jackie B., Kristy V., Carole D., Jennifer and John N., Sharon C., Jim W., Susan C., George M., Mary Ellen W., Janise J., Lucy M., Susan K., Carol E. & Robyn McC.!!!
Thank you also to the foster flunkies whose numbers are in the many out there. At least we know those dogs went to very special homes.

And They Keep on Coming
Pups push us to our limits
Ever felt like you were run over by a freight train??? That's how we've been feeling this past month. There have been FOURTEEN more at-risk dogs joining us in rescue! Four were 8-week-old shelter pups who required some specialized care for a virus that tested as Parvo. Thankfully it was not as devastating. Plus, there was poor special needs DALLY who we took from Miami-Dade's animal control with compounded fractures in TWO legs. Broke our heart to think what he suffered; he will have surgery today to properly repair those legs. Our list of new arrivals for April are: SOPHIE, SPUD, the magic kids GARRUK & AVACYN, OREO, the Little Women (MEG, BETH, JO, & AMY), COCHRAN, DALLY, SPOT, ROMEO and a new kid . Also, Sophie will require heartworm treatment. At least we've had several wonderful adoptions and most of the puppies are spoken for though they won't go to their new homes until they've been altered. Our March adoptions are JULIET, BOSCO,SPUD, COCHRAN, OREO and 3 of the Little Women (BETH, JO, & AMY)... YAY! See why fosters are so vital?
We began 2013 with 9 dogs carrying over from 2012. So far we have brought in 40 new dogs plus 1 return. We have had 7 dogs cross the Rainbow Bridge under our care due to old age issues or illness. Our adoption count to begin 2013 is 28 dogs into loving homes. We still have the responsibility of caring for 30 Dals & dogs. ANY or ALL could use SPONSORS! Your help is very much needed.
Our Dals & dogs, in various stages of readiness, seeking their forever homes are:
We list all our adoptable dogs on www.Petfinder.com. PLEASE let us know if you can help these dogs with a loving home or getting them to events so that they might get adopted!

It's not all just heartworm treatments for our rescues
We seem to have a special knack for taking in many hardship cases. It seems that the shelters all know that we are "softies" or as some might call us lovingly "suckers". Either way, we can't turn on back on those suffering that need us the most. Just this month, young Dally was found in Miami with two broken legs. It was initially thought a car hit him. They cast him at the shelter but on closer observation by one of our vets, the breaks were pretty bad and would need to have specialized surgery in order to heal correctly. She also thought the breaks were too low for him to have been hit by a car. No matter what has happened to him, he still has a loving, gentle spirit and a wagging tail. Kendall was a cruelty case we pulled from Georgia last year. He was literally thrown out of his home. We knew something was not right with his walking and recently found out he has a torn ACL that needs surgery by a specialist to relieve his pain. He has been putting on a brave face despite the pain. His adopted Mom, herself a survivor of 9/11 in New York, doesn't have the means to pay to help him although she loves him dearly.
Both boys are getting surgery today, May 1st. It is only because of the generous support that we receive from our donors that we can afford to help these special cases. Please know that when you donate to DRTB, you are making a huge difference in the lives of so many that otherwise wouldn't have made it.
