Dear ,

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God. - Ephisians 2:8 (NLT)

I enjoy brain teasers and puzzles that have an obvious answer but often confuse anyone attempting to answer.   While I'm usually fairly good at getting the correct solution, my brother recently got me with this one:

An electric train left the station traveling southbound at 50 miles per hour.   The wind that day was blowing from east to west at a speed of 15 miles per hour.   When the train had traveled 50 miles, which direction was the smoke from the engine blowing?

My answer that day, "Behind the train, I suppose".

Well my brother had a big laugh and said, "There wouldn't be any smoke coming from an ""Electric Train!""   He had gotten me!

Thinking about brain teasers this week, and remembering this one, made me think of another question posed by pastor Andy Stanley concerning man's misguided effort toward earning salvation.   "How Good is Good Enough?"   How would you answer that one? If there is a way for us to earn our salvation, what would it be?   Would living a good life without hurting anyone be good enough? What if we said something that hurt someone's feelings? Wouldn't that disqualify us from heaven? Who would set the standard for what is good enough?

Of course, the answer to the question of "How Good is Good Enough" is as plain as no smoke coming from an electric train, but many people get it wrong just the same. The correct answer is that there is no way for us to be "Good Enough", it is only by the Grace of God through a relationship with Jesus that we are saved regardless of our "Good enough" efforts.

I'm glad I don't have to measure up to standards that I could never meet, and to know that there is nothing that I've done that isn't covered by the sacrifice Christ made for me on the Cross.

Blessings,
Steve <><

Surely there's more than one way to get to heaven. Bestselling author Andy Stanley addresses this popular belief held even among Christians. But believing that all good people go to heaven raises major problems, Stanley reveals.

Is goodness not rewarded, then? Is Christianity not fair?

Maybe not, he says. Readers will find out why Jesus taught that goodness is not even a requirement to enter heaven - and why Christianity is beyond fair. Andy Stanley leads believers and skeptics alike to a grateful awareness of God's enormous grace and mercy.

These days the terms good and God seem synonymous. We believe what's generally accepted as good must be in line with God's will. Generosity, humility, justice - good. Selfishness, arrogance, cruelty - evil. The distinction seems pretty straightforward.

But is that all there is to it? If good is so obvious, why does the Bible say that we need discernment to recognize it? Good or God? isn't another self-help message. This book will do more than ask you to change your behavior. It will empower you to engage with God on a level that will change every aspect of your life.

Many Christians today feel overwhelmed as they try to live faithfully in a culture that seems increasingly hostile to their beliefs. Politics, marriage, sexuality, religious freedom--with an ever-growing list of contentious issues, believers find it harder than ever to hold on to their convictions while treating their friends, neighbors, coworkers, and even family members who disagree with respect and compassion.

This isn't just a problem that affects individual Christians; if left unaddressed, the growing gap between the faithful and society's tolerance for public faith will have lasting consequences for the church in America.

Now the bestselling authors of "unChristian" turn their data-driven insights toward the thorny question of how Christians talk with people they know and love about the most toxic issues of our day. They help today's disciples understand what they believe and why, and how to keep believing it without being judgmental and defensive. Readers will discover the most significant trends that offer both obstacles and opportunities to God's people, and how not only to challenge culture but to create and renew it for the common good.

Lazarus occupies a surprising position in the Gospel accounts. Widely known as the man Jesus raised from the dead, his story is actually much broader and richer than that. Living as he did at Bethany, near Jerusalem, Lazarus was uniquely placed to witness the swirl of events around Jesus.

When Jesus Wept, the first novel in The Jerusalem Chronicles series by bestselling authors Bodie and Brock Thoene, unfolds the turbulent times in Judea during Jesus' ministry, centering on the friendship between Jesus and Lazarus. With rich insights from vineyard owners and vine dressers, the Thoenes explore the metaphor of Jesus as the True Vine, harvesting the ancient secrets found in the Old Testament. Weaving the life of Lazarus, who owned a vineyard, into the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ will help you understand it is the hand of Love Divine that holds the knife, that cuts and breaks with such tender and loving touch, and that we who have born some fruit, after the pruning, can bear much more.
