Dear ,

Like a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord gives compassion to those who fear Him. Psalm 103:13 (Modern English Version)

This will be my first father's day without my earthly father. It still doesn't seem possible that the man who was a stabilizing rock to me all my life is no longer available for advice, guidance and just sharing life's experiences. I will miss him the rest of my life
.
Shortly after his stroke in January of 2015, my siblings and I began reminiscing about all the things dad would say and do. He tended to be so gruff on the outside, especially to my brother, sister and I, but such a teddy bear to others who saw past the hard façade. If I had a dollar for every time he'd ask if my head was attached to my shoulders, or if I'd been born in a barn, or "I didn't feel a thing" whenever I'd get hurt, I'm positive that I could retire with a small fortune. Yet, through all the tough talk and heavy discipline I always knew that I could count on him for help and that he accepted me and loved me despite my shortcomings.

My dad was committed to raise me in a way that taught me to serve and worship God, to respect others, to work hard, to apply myself to whatever task is placed before me and to stand firm on principles of right and wrong. I firmly believe that if there were more fathers like mine that our country would be in much better shape morally and spiritually than it is today.   He never compromised his beliefs, and made sure that I knew the difference whenever I tried to rationalize away any of my thoughts or actions that contradicted truth.

My hope is that my children and grandchildren will see glimpses of my father in me and just as my father's life has blessed me, my life will be a blessing to them. I pray that I will lead them, not only with words but through my example, to be children who serve God and pass on the faithfulness of their heritage to generations to come.

Be sure this Father's day to give your dad a hug, or, if like me you are without him this day give thanks to God for His love and compassion as you remember your earthly father.

Blessings,
Steve <><

When Jesus Wept

Lazarus occupies a surprising position in the Gospel accounts. Widely known as the man Jesus raised from the dead, his story is actually much broader and richer than that. Living as he did at Bethany, near Jerusalem, Lazarus was uniquely placed to witness the swirl of events around Jesus.

When Jesus Wept, the first novel in The Jerusalem Chronicles series by bestselling authors Bodie and Brock Thoene, unfolds the turbulent times in Judea during Jesus' ministry, centering on the friendship between Jesus and Lazarus. With rich insights from vineyard owners and vine dressers, the Thoenes explore the metaphor of Jesus as the True Vine, harvesting the ancient secrets found in the Old Testament. Weaving the life of Lazarus, who owned a vineyard, into the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ will help you understand it is the hand of Love Divine that holds the knife, that cuts and breaks with such tender and loving touch, and that we who have born some fruit, after the pruning, can bear much more.

I am a Church Member
$5.00 In Store
Best-selling author and ministry leader Thom S. Rainer drew an exceptional response when he posted a 500-word declaration about church membership to his daily blog. "I Am a Church Member" started a conversation about the attitudes and responsibilities of church members -- rather than the functional and theological issues -- that previous new member primers all but ignored.
Thoughtfully expanded to book form, I Am a Church Member begins to remedy the outbreak of inactive or barely committed church members, addressing without apology what is expected of those who join a body of believers. When a person's attitude is consistently biblical and healthy, matters of giving, serving, and so forth will fall into place more naturally.

Six intentional chapters with study questions guide this rising discussion:
1. I Will Be a Unifying Church Member
2. I Will Not Let the Church Be About My Preferences and Desires
3. I Will Pray for My Church Leaders
4. I Will Lead My Family to Be Healthy Church Members
5. I Will Be a Functioning Member
6. I Will Treasure Church Membership as a Gift

Autopsy of a Deceased Church
$5.00 In Store
No one wants to see a church die. And yet, far too many churches are dying. For more than twenty-five years, Dr. Thom Rainer has helped churches grow, reverse the trends of decline, and has autopsied those that have died. From this experience, he has discovered twelve consistent themes among those churches that have died. Yet, it's not gloom and doom because from those twelve themes, lessons on how to keep your church alive have emerged.

Whether your church is vibrant or dying, whether you are a pastor or a church member, "Autopsy of a Deceased Church" will walk you through the radical paths necessary to keep your church alive to the glory of God and advancement of Christ's Kingdom

Some Parting Fun...
When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant; I could hardly stand to have the old man around.

But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in 7 years.
