Dear ,
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2 (NIV)
Did you notice the wording in the scripture above; "but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."? Let's put that another way, unless you renew your mind you won't be transformed. Or, without putting anything different in, nothing different will come out.
The definition of renewal is the replacing or repair of something that is worn out, run-down, or broken. Some synonyms for renewal are renovation, restoration, overhauling, reconstruction, rebuilding and redevelopment. So a better understanding may be gained when we consider that we will be transformed by the renovation, overhauling, and reconstruction of our minds.
As a computer programmer I'm familiar with a saying concerning data that states: "Garbage in; Garbage out." It's the same way with our minds! When we dump nothing but garbage into our heads, the results can't be anything other than garbage coming out.
The Christian booksellers association has a motto that says; "What goes into a mind comes out in a life." In his letter to the Philippians Paul writes, "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things." If we put good things in, good things will come out!
In order to effectively rebuild our minds it is important that we do so on a daily basis, not just once a week on Sunday morning. Develop a daily discipline of reading the Bible, praying and meditating on those things that will renew and refresh. Find books that will restore and uplift, listen to words of encouragement and inspiration, think on things eternal rather than dwelling on the negative of today's news. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will!

We love to cheer for the underdog and believe to our core that every life makes a difference. And we are right. There is no one God can't use and no one whose brokenness is too broken for God. We know this is true for our friends when we want to encourage them. Yet, when it comes to the places of our innermost sense of shame and regret, we often wonder if it is really true that God can work all things together for good for those who love Him.
Angie Smith is one who was quick to encourage a friend, but struggled to believe that God could truly make something spectacular out of her broken- ness and disappointments. Responding to God's leading to both break and reconstruct a simple pitcher, she reflected: "It was as though God were saying," here you are, Angie. You are mended.
