Dear ,

"Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah." - Psalm 46:10-11

During Sunday school last week we came across the word "Selah" while reading a passage in the Psalms.   I'm guessing that many of you, like the members of our Sunday School class, have wondered just what "Selah" means. Our consensus was that the word is commonly translated as a 'pause' or a 'suspension' from the music contained in the Psalms.

Why would there be a pause? Most interpret the pause "Selah" was placed in the scripture to instruct the Israelites to take some time to meditate and reflect on the words they had been singing. They knew the music, and the words, but God wanted them to think about the words.

I wonder how it would be in our worship if, after singing a verse of a hymn, we'd pause for a few moments to allow the words we are singing to sink into our hearts? Or, when reading a Bible passage that we would be still for some time and meditate on what we were reading; asking God to illuminate our hearts with His truth.

We need to take time to be still and let the things we are singing or reading soak in.   It's not a good thing to be so busy that we neglect some quiet, spiritual reflection.   By not being so busy with our schedules we'll allow the Peace of God to wash over and through us, to revive us and grow us in His loving grace.   Selah

Blessings,
Steve

Beloved teacher Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe leads the journey through the valleys and mountains of Old Testament kings and queens, illuminating the painful confessions, the anger toward God, and the holy desires they modeled for generations to come. It's the unaltered, vulnerable grit of human experience that gives Psalms its credibility and makes it so valuable for building a real relationship with God.

Writing as they would to a dear friend, the psalmists--King David and others--compose a songwriter's masterpiece through their unfathomable awe of the Creator of the universe. Out of the bottomless well of human emotion and purity of expression come both cries of pain and shouts of joy--genuine expressions which not only elevate our respect for the psalmists themselves, but also draw us into a deeper relationship with our Lord.

"You'll get through this."
"It won't be painless."
"It won't be quick."
"But God will use this mess for good."
"Don't be foolish or naive."
"But don't despair either."

"With God's help, you'll get through this."
You fear you won't make it through. We all do. We fear that the depression will never lift, the yelling will never stop, the pain will never leave. In the pits, surrounded by steep walls and aching reminders, we wonder: Will this gray sky ever brighten? This load ever lighten?

In" You'll Get Through This," pastor and" New York Times" best-selling author, Max Lucado offers sweet assurance. "Deliverance is to the Bible what jazz music is to Mardi Gras: bold, brassy, and everywhere." Max reminds readers God doesn't promise that getting through trials will be quick or painless. It wasn't for Joseph--tossed in a pit by his brothers, sold into slavery, wrongfully imprisoned, forgotten and dismissed--but his Old Testament story is in the Bible for this reason: to teach us to trust God to trump evil.

With the compassion of a pastor, the heart of a storyteller, and the joy of one who has seen what God can do, Max explores the story of Joseph and the truth of Genesis 50:20. What Satan intends for evil, God redeems for good.

Some Parting Fun...
The Junior Sunday School Teacher asked her eight eager 10 year-olds if they would give a $1,000,000 to the missionaries.

"Yes!" they all screamed!

"Would you give $1,000?" Again, they shouted "YES!"

How about $100?" "Oh, yes we would!" they all agreed!

"Would you just give a dollar to the missionaries?" she asked.

The boys exclaimed, "Yes!" just as before, except for Johnny.

"Johnnie," the teacher said as she noticed the boy clutching his pocket, "Why didn't you say 'yes' this time?"

"Well," the boy stammered, "I have a dollar!"
