Dear ,
"but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. Let all who are spiritually mature agree on these things. If you disagree on some point, I believe God will make it plain to you." (Philippians 3:13-15 NLT)
Super Bowl Sunday is here! The excitement is growing as the day approaches as fans across the country choose their sides. Marie and I enjoy watching the game and often are cheering for the same team to win. Unfortunately this year neither of our favorite teams made it to the big game.
Getting to the championship isn't something that comes easily. It's not for the faint at heart or the lazy; it takes years of dedicated practice and hard work. It also takes a good deal of study in order to understand the intricacies of the game, how the plays work and how to react to every situation. Additionally, it takes surrender. Surrender of the individual will to the authority of those in leadership positions, whether the coaches or captains. It is also important to give everything for the good of the team. Playing as an individual rather than as a member of the team will most usually result in undesired results.
Being a Christ follower, has some parallels to that of an athlete striving for the championship. As Christians we need to daily exercise our faith in order to keep a close relationship with Christ. We need to practice the precepts for righteous living laid out in the manual; the Holy Word. We need to surrender our will to the leadership and authority of Christ so that others see Him when they look at us. We need to support and encourage our fellow believers so that the Body of Christ grows and thrives.
As you enjoy the game this Sunday; maybe take some time to reflect on what it takes to be at the top of the game. May we do whatever is within our means to keep on striving for the goal so that one glorious day we too will gain the prize that is set before us.
Don't you know that the runners in a stadium all race, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way to win the prize.
1 Corinthians 9:24 (HCSB)

Preparing for Heaven
|
Theologian Gary Black Jr., Dallas Willard s friend and apprentice, integrates the revered teacher s final conversations about death and the afterlife with his profound teachings on spiritual life, offering a unique and astonishing look at heaven and what it holds for us.
In the year before his death, Dallas Willard shared moving and insightful conversations about the afterlife with Gary Black Jr, informal dialogues steeped in theology yet grounded in the here and now. Dallas believed that our mortal lives are preparation for what comes next. He maintained that death is not the end of one life and the beginning of another, but rather a transition during which we continue the spiritual work begun in this incarnation. In his acclaimed books, Dallas explored the Christian life in the earthly kingdom. Yet one topic remained untouched: his vision of heaven. For the first time, Preparing for Heaven illuminates Dallas s most intimately held views, including the few mystical occurrences he experienced while dying. Informative and moving, Dallas s final insights challenge us to reconsider our beliefs that perhaps the line separating the afterlife from this life is not as absolute as we think, and that there is work we must do both now and after our own deaths. And that perhaps our faith is more vibrant and eternal than we dare to imagine."

God Wins
|
Rob Bell's book, "Love Wins, " has generated a national conversation about ultimate issues, such as the nature of hell, heaven, and the ultimate destiny of humankind. Yet, the book has also created unnecessary confusion.
"God Wins" is a response to the provocative questions "Love Wins" has raised. In "God Wins, " Mark Galli explores the important questions that are left unasked and the issues left uncharted. Mark shows how "Love Wins" is not enough--and that there is even better news for our world. Includes a group-discussion guide with relevant Scripture passages.

"You'll get through this."
"It won't be painless."
"It won't be quick."
"But God will use this mess for good."
"Don't be foolish or naive."
"But don't despair either."
"With God's help, you'll get through this." You fear you won't make it through. We all do. We fear that the depression will never lift, the yelling will never stop, the pain will never leave. In the pits, surrounded by steep walls and aching reminders, we wonder: Will this gray sky ever brighten? This load ever lighten? In" You'll Get Through This," pastor and" New York Times" best-selling author, Max Lucado offers sweet assurance. "Deliverance is to the Bible what jazz music is to Mardi Gras: bold, brassy, and everywhere." Max reminds readers God doesn't promise that getting through trials will be quick or painless. It wasn't for Joseph--tossed in a pit by his brothers, sold into slavery, wrongfully imprisoned, forgotten and dismissed--but his Old Testament story is in the Bible for this reason: to teach us to trust God to trump evil. With the compassion of a pastor, the heart of a storyteller, and the joy of one who has seen what God can do, Max explores the story of Joseph and the truth of Genesis 50:20. What Satan intends for evil, God redeems for good.

Some Parting Fun...
|
By the time Bobby arrived, the football game had already started. "Why are you so late?" asked his friend.
"I couldn't decide between going to church and going to the football game. So I tossed a coin," said Bobby.
"But that shouldn't have taken too long." said the friend.
"Well, I had to toss it 35 times."
