Dear ,

The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.   Isaiah 40:3 (KJV)

The second week of advent usually finds us reading this familiar passage of scripture along with the account of John the Baptist, of whom Isaiah is prophesying, proclaiming the coming of the Messiah. As I reflect on this scripture two thoughts come to mind.

First, is the way straight in my heart for God to dwell with me? Have I humbled myself and sought forgiveness for anything that would come between God and me? Have I opened myself to His gentle voice leading me into His will for my life? Am I holding onto any ill feelings or harboring any grudges against anyone that would keep me from receiving God's grace?

The next thought is; if my heart is right with God am I doing what I need to do in order to bring His light to those around me? Do I, with His help, live in a way that others will see Christ in me? Do I offer my encouragement, support and love to everyone or do I selfishly keep to myself what I have to offer?   Am I making the way straight for anyone who knows me or does the testimony of my words and actions hinder their way?

Just as John was one voice crying in the wilderness, one voice proclaiming righteousness, we need to reflect on the mission we've been given to do the same. It's important that we make the path straight so that God can work in and through us, making us into His likeness and using us to bring others to His saving grace.

Dear Lord, help me this season to be one voice, among many, who proclaim your coming to a world so desperately needing you. Help me to prepare my heart for your presence and to prepare my life to serve you as you've called me to do. Help me to make straight a highway in the desert so that others can come to a saving knowledge of you.   Amen

Blessings,
Steve <><

Each author explores the meaning of Christmas in different facets of the holiday:

  • Rick Warren--the real gift of Christmas is that God sent His own Son to connect with the human race
  • David Jeremiah--why the name of Jesus is so important and perfect
  • John Maxwell--how to journey like the wise men to unexpected places
  • Jack Hayford--a look into Mary's story, a woman who embraced the seemingly impossible with God at her side

Advent Wreath
Advent Wreath - Many in Stock / On Line
The Advent wreath is a circular garland of evergreen branches representing eternity. On that wreath, five candles are typically arranged. During the season of Advent one candle on the wreath is lit each Sunday as a part of the Advent services. Each candle represents an aspect of the spiritual preparation for the coming of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

Advent Wreath Candles

Set on the branches of the wreath are four candles: three purple candles and one pink candle. In the center of the wreath sits a white candle. As a whole, these candles represent the coming of the light of Christ into the world.

On the first Sunday of Advent, the first purple candle is lit. This candle is typically called the "Prophecy Candle" in remembrance of the prophets, primarily Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ. This candle represents hope or expectation in anticipation of the coming Messiah.

Each week on Sunday, an additional candle is lit. On the second Sunday of Advent, the second purple candle is lit. This candle typically represents love. Some traditions call this the "Bethlehem Candle," symbolizing Christ's manger.

On the third Sunday of Advent the pink, or rose-colored candle is lit. This pink candle is customarily called the "Shepherds Candle" and it represents joy.

The fourth and last purple candle, oftentimes called the "Angels Candle," represents peace and is lit on the fourth Sunday of Advent.

On Christmas Eve, the white center candle is traditionally lit. This candle is called the "Christ Candle" and represents the life of Christ that has come into the world. The color white represents purity. Christ is the sinless, spotless, pure Savior. Also, those who receive Christ as Savior are washed of their sins and made whiter than snow.
