Dear ,
"Over the river and through the wood to Grandmother's house we go..."
With Thanksgiving just a week away I was thinking about this poem, heard a lot as a children's song during the holidays when I was young. It was always a favorite of mine and I enjoyed singing along, especially as we traveled to Grandmother's house for Thanksgiving dinner. The day was filled with joy as we visited with family, watched the Thanksgiving Day parade on TV, enjoyed some delicious food, played games, and made plans for Christmas.
Life seemed much simpler in those days; I don't remember my parents being stressed out about the holidays, and Thanksgiving was a time of relaxation, restoration and thankfulness. Christmas was on the horizon but no one worried about having to wrap up Thanksgiving dinner in time to make it to the mega-store to grab some great "deal" on a Christmas gift.
Today it seems that people are too stressed about things that in reality aren't worth the worry. Much time and energy are wasted on activities that won't make any difference in the end, and all the stress takes a huge toll on health and relationships. Our lives, physically and spiritually, would be much better if we'd concentrate on the things that matter rather than stressing about the things that don't.
Here are some things to keep in mind over the next few weeks; hopefully they will help.
- Your worth is not determined by what you do. - You can't always make things perfect, the turkey may be dry, the gifts might not be wrapped as nice as you'd like, the house may not be decorated just so. These things are not the measure of who you are; it's okay.
- You can't keep everyone happy. - What you can afford to give, or do, doesn't define who you are. Remember that your value as a parent, spouse or friend is in who you are, not in what you do. Be yourself and don't get caught in the trap of thinking you have to be everything to everyone.
- Set realistic goals for an enjoyable holiday season. - Goals like reconnecting with a special friend, setting a budget and sticking to it, getting Christmas cards sent, or even something as simple as a goal of "less is more" when planning activities.
- Accept others as they are. - Don't try to change those difficult people in your life during the holidays, just love and accept them. You don't have to approve of what they do but love them as Jesus loves them, and you. This will do much to relieve stress during those times with family members that don't see eye-to-eye.
Above all, keep your focus on Christ and the reason we celebrate the season. Doing so will help you eliminate the stress of the holidays and allow you to embrace the attitudes of Thanksgiving, Hope, Love, Joy and Peace.
Blessings,
Steve <><

Mary's First Thanksgiving
|
Sometimes all it takes is a little faith ...
Most days, Mary loves her new home in America. But now it's Thanksgiving time, and her family has little food. Mary begins to wish she could go back to Ireland. So Father tells Mary the story of how the Pilgrims struggled when they first came to America. There were times when they had barely enough food, just like their family. But five kernels of corn helped the Pilgrims survive and helped make their faith stronger. Will the legend of the five kernels help grow a new faith in Mary too?
