In my devotional time a couple of weeks ago I was reading some thoughts of Thanksgiving where the author had changed the word to "Thanksliving."
Thanks Living, what an appropriate approach to Thanksgiving! We should live our lives each and every day in a way that gives God the glory for all that He is and does. Continuing my reflection on thanks brought to mind the great hymn "Now Thank We All Our God." I did a little research on the origin of the hymn and was not too surprised to find that the thought of living a life of thanks and the origin of the hymn had a lot in common.
The hymn was written by Martin Rinkart, a Lutheran minister, in 1636 during one of the most tumultuous periods of German history. Martin served as a Lutheran pastor in Eilenberg, Germany and faithfully served his flock throughout the troubling time of the Thirty Year's war. The war caused so much famine and disease that thousands died and at one point it is said that Rinkart was conducting up to 50 funerals per day. Imagine the grief and hardship he and the people of this and other communities throughout the area experienced. Yet, in the midst of this suffering a hymn of thanksgiving was birthed from a "thanks living" heart in appreciation for God's unfailing love and strength.
"Now thank we all our God, with heart and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done, in whom this world rejoices;
Who from our mothers' arms, has blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love, and still is ours today."
Next time I'm feeling a little bummed out with the hassles of life I need to remember that a life lived in thanks is a perfect way to give thanks; not only as we celebrate Thanksgiving but as we practice ThanksLiving.
