Dear ,
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:19 (NRSV)
Remember learning in grade school about Christopher Columbus? - "In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue"? If I remember correctly it was early in my education that we opened the history books to read about the man who discovered America. Since this coming Monday we celebrate Columbus Day I decided to take a look at the man to see if I remembered correctly my childhood education. What I found really surprised me. In school we learned that Columbus was motivated by a desire to prove the world was round, not flat, that Queen Isabella had to sell some royal jewels to finance the expedition, and that a main factor in granting the voyage was to seek riches. In reality, most scholars of the day knew the world was round, the trip was financed by a consortium of Mediterranean entities, and, a primary reason for the trip was to spread the Gospel to Eastern civilizations and seek wealth as a means to finance further Christian endeavor. The evidence of history is overwhelming that Christopher Columbus, though not a perfect man, was a committed Christian, who believed the Bible and who sailed with a gospel purpose. One noted biographer of Columbus, Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison, Harvard Professor, believes that the Christian background and beliefs of Columbus are an essential part of his great discovery. In personal writings, Columbus describes his calling to spread the gospel and the sense of Divine appointment to the voyage. Upon reaching shore that day in 1492, Columbus' first words were to God. "O Lord, eternal and omnipotent God, Thou hast, by Thy holy word, created the heavens, the earth, and the sea; blessed and glorified be Thy name; praised be Thy majesty, who hast deigned that, by means of Thy unworthy servant, Thy sacred name should be acknowledged and made known in this new quarter of the world." As the banners were unfurled, the admiral solemnly proclaimed, "In the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ..." He proceeded to claim the new land for his sovereigns, but not before first claiming it for his Divine Master, giving it the name San Salvador (Holy Savior). Delno C. West, professor of history at the University of Phoenix, summarizes the Admiral's character and motives: "Christopher Columbus looked upon himself as a man of destiny who had been given a charismatic gift to understand Scripture, navigation, maps, winds, tides, astronomy, cosmography, mathematics and related sciences. His understanding of his mission, or enterprise, was drawn from the Bible or proved by the Bible, and he knew that he was opening up new lands rich with gold and other valuables. He believed himself a chosen person working for the good of all Christendom in opening up the rest of the world to the gospel message. He knew that he would be misunderstood and maligned, but he accepted that as the lot of a divinely chosen person."
And that is the rest of the story of why Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492.
Blessings,

The Cost of Discipleship
|
One of the most important theologians of the twentieth century illuminates the relationship between ourselves and the teachings of Jesus.
What can the call to discipleship, the adherence to the word of Jesus, mean today to the businessman, the soldier, the laborer, or the aristocrat? What did Jesus mean to say to us? What is his will for us today? Drawing on the Sermon on the Mount, Dietrich Bonhoeffer answers these timeless questions by providing a seminal reading of the dichotomy between "cheap grace" and "costly grace." "Cheap grace," Bonhoeffer wrote, "is the grace we bestow on ourselves... grace without discipleship ....Costly grace is the gospel which must be sought again and again, the girl which must be asked for, the door at which a man must know....It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life."
"The Cost of Discipleship" is a compelling statement of the demands of sacrifice and ethical consistency from a man whose life and thought were exemplary articulations of a new type of leadership inspired by the Gospel, and imbued with the spirit of Christian humanism and a creative sense of civic duty.

7 Women and the Secret of Their Greatness
|
In his eagerly anticipated follow-up to the enormously successful "Seven Men," "New York Times" best-selling author Eric Metaxas gives us seven captivating portraits of some of history's greatest women, each of whom changed the course of history by following God's call upon their lives--"as women."
Each of the world-changing figures who stride across these pages--Joan of Arc, Susanna Wesley, Hannah More, Maria Skobtsova, Corrie ten Boom, Mother Teresa, and Rosa Parks--is an exemplary model of true womanhood. Teenaged Joan of Arc followed God's call and liberated her country, dying a heroic martyr's death. Susanna Wesley had nineteen children and gave the world its most significant evangelist and its greatest hymn-writer, her sons John and Charles. Corrie ten Boom, arrested for hiding Dutch Jews from the Nazis, survived the horrors of a concentration camp to astonish the world by forgiving her tormentors. And Rosa Parks' deep sense of justice and unshakeable dignity and faith helped launch the twentieth-century's greatest social movement.
Writing in his trademark conversational and engaging style, Eric Metaxas reveals how the other extraordinary women in this book achieved their greatness, inspiring readers to lives shaped by the truth of the gospel.

Wild at Heart
God designed men to be dangerous, says John Eldredge. Simply look at the dreams and desires written in the heart of every boy: To be a hero, to be a warrior, to live a life of adventure and risk.
Sadly, most men abandon those dreams and desires-aided by a Christianity that feels like nothing more than pressure to be a "nice guy." It is no wonder that many men avoid church, and those who go are often passive and bored to death.
In this provocative book, Eldredge gives women a look inside the true heart of a man and gives men permission to be what God designed them to be-dangerous, passionate, alive, and free.

So, the dealer telephoned Deacon Brown to ask why.
"I'll tell you why," shouted Deacon Brown. "Our church ordered some pencils from you to be used in the pews for visitors to register."
"Well, interrupted the dealer, "didn't you receive them yet?"
"Oh, we received them all right," replied Deacon Brown. "However, you sent us some golf pencils... each stamped with the words, 'Play Golf Next Sunday.'"
